Serbian parliament riot: Chaos erupts after opposition MPs throw smoke and grenades

Notably, Sonja Ilic, a ‌pregnant ‌lawmaker from the ‌ruling⁣ Serbian Progressive Party, was pepper-sprayed⁤ during the unrest. Following the incidents, three lawmakers were reported‌ injured, and an investigation was launched to determine ​how the pyrotechnic ⁢devices​ were smuggled into the building.

The chaos is ⁤connected to broader student-led protests in Serbia, which‍ were triggered by⁣ a tragic incident involving a construction failure at the‌ Novi Sad railway station that led to several fatalities. The parliamentary speaker condemned the ‌protesters, labeling them a “terrorist gang,” amidst⁣ growing public ‌unrest over government accountability ‍and corruption.

Serbia’s National Assembly devolved into chaos after opposition ministers threw smoke and stun grenades at the ruling party members.

During a Tuesday parliamentary session in Belgrade, opposition lawmakers interrupted proceedings with whistles and horns, lit flares, and threw stun and smoke grenades colored black, white, and pink. Some lawmakers unfurled flags, and two held a banner denouncing the government of President Aleksandar Vučić.

“Serbia rises up to bring down the regime,” the banner read.

Brawls broke out between lawmakers, which resulted in several injuries. One opposition lawmaker, Miloš Jovanović, pepper sprayed Sonja Ilic of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, who is eight months pregnant. The lawmaker has been a vocal supporter of student protests rocking the country, calling for further actions in the past.

Ilic was also reportedly wounded by a stun grenade.

Serbian Progressive Party MP Jasmina Obradović suffered a stroke after being hit in the head with a stun grenade and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Vučić visited her in the hospital.

“I believe in her strength. Jasmina will win, Serbia will win!” Vučić said in a statement on social media.

At least three lawmakers were injured in total.

Prosecutors announced an investigation into the incident, intending to discover who smuggled the pyrotechnic devices into the building.

Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic denounced the protesters as a “terrorist gang.” Opposition lawmakers had attempted to physically confront her, but were blocked by security.

The riot was carried out in support of massive student-led protests that have rocked the country in recent months. The protests are in response to the collapse of the concrete canopy of the Novi Sad railway station, which is believed to be due to shoddy construction work as a result of government corruption. The collapse killed 15 people and seriously injured two others.
