Seth Meyers defends writer cut from White House Correspondents Dinner – Washington Examiner

Seth Meyers, the late-night talk show host, recently defended writer Amber Ruffin after her scheduled performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was canceled. Ruffin’s absence marks only the second time in the dinner’s history, excluding the pandemic years, that a comedian will not perform, as the White House Correspondents’ Association has not named a replacement.

During a recent episode of his show, Meyers expressed his admiration for Ruffin, saying, “I’m a big fan of Amber Ruffin,” and voiced disappointment over missing her performance. Ruffin had faced criticism for stating that she would not treat both political sides equally, which was viewed as divisive. In response to her critics, she humorously remarked that if given the chance to perform, she would have been very critical in her speech. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges and tensions surrounding political satire in today’s atmosphere.

Seth Meyers defends writer cut from White House Correspondents’ Dinner: ‘I’m a big fan’

Late-night talk show host Seth Meyers defended his writer Amber Ruffin after her headlining performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was canceled.

Ruffin’s absence will be the second time in the dinner’s history that there won’t be a comedic performance, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic years, as the White House Correspondents’ Association hasn’t announced a replacement. Others who have hosted the dinner include Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert.

”I just want to take a moment to say that I’m a big fan of Amber Ruffin, and I would have loved to hear what she had to say,” Meyers said Monday night.

Meyers then reported on a robbery of a Brooklyn bodega, in which a suspect broke the front door, emptied the cash register, and set the ATM on fire. Ruffin interrupted with a joking plea: “When bad people do bad things, you have to treat them fairly and respectfully.”

This was a nod to the criticisms of her upcoming performance, as she came under fire for suggesting “there was no way” she would be “equal” to both political sides as she was asked to do.

“The problem is that’s divisive. Take it from me. If there’s one thing I learned from this weekend, it’s you have to be fair to both sides,” Ruffin said. “But the point is that you’re sowing the seeds of discord. And I used to be the same way. I thought when people take away your rights, erase your history, and deport your friends, you’re supposed to call it out. But I was wrong. Glad to find that out now, because if they had let me give that speech, ooh baby, I would have been so terrifically mean.”

President Donald Trump was the target of televised roast events on Comedy Central before he entered politics. He also poked fun at himself on an episode of Saturday Night Live during the 2016 campaign.

Vice President JD Vance also familiarized himself with comedians on the campaign trail. Vance appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience, Theo Von’s This Past Weekend, and the Tim Dillon Show within a few days. Rogan and Von were in attendance at the inauguration earlier this year.
