MAYORKAS SAYS TITLE 42 BORDER SITUATION IS ‘VERY SERIOUS’ AND ‘VERY DIFFICULT’
Eleven people were transported to a local hospital, including one who was airlifted to Valley Baptist Harlingen, according to the Brownsville Fire Department. Injuries range from serious to minor.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is being screened for possible drug or alcohol use. He is being kept in the hospital and is under 24-hour supervision. A motive for the incident is not immediately clear.
“What we see in the video is that this SUV, a Range Rover, just ran the light that was about a hundred feet away and just went through the people who were sitting there in the bus stop,” Victor Maldonado, the shelter director, told the Associated Press.
Ozanam is the only overnight facility that handles migrants released from federal authorities, according to the report. It can house up to 250 people.
Brownsville is a city fixated in close proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border. The accident comes amid high anticipation of a migrant surge next week after the pandemic-era Title 42 policy expires on May 11.
