Deputy Responds To Family’s’s Allegation That Loved One Was” Eared Live” By Bed Bugs At Atlanta Jail

In response to a family’s’s claim that an inmate from Atlanta, Georgia, was” eaten alive” by bed bugs, the Fulton County Sheriffs Office said it was starting” a full investigation” into his death.

On June 12, 2022, 35-year-old Lashawn Thompson was detained on suspicion of a criminal plain battery charge, according to CBS News. Due to his mental health issues, he was taken to Fulton County Jail and given a medical extension.

Thompson was discovered dead in a filthy jail cell on September 19 after being eaten alive by insects and bed bugs, according to family attorney Michael Harper’s’s Facebook statement( WARNING: disturbing images ).

The Fulton County Sheriff’s’s Office ( FCSO) announced on Twitter on Friday that it would begin” a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding[ Thompson ] death.”

Sheriff Patrick Labat may require the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to decide whether any legal costs are warranted in Thompson’s’s suicide after the internal investigation is finished, according to the statement.

The statement stated that” the health, well-being, and security of inmates in our consideration is our top focus.” It goes without saying that it is extremely challenging to achieve the goal of providing a safe, clean, well-maintained, and healthy environment for all individuals and people due to the current facility’s’s dilapidated and rapidly deteriorating problems. It’s’s fair to say that this is one of many instances that demonstrate the urgent need for expanded and better mental health services, without making any explicit statements about Mr. Thompson. Because of this, Sheriff Labat is still urging the construction of a different Fulton County Jail and Criminal Justice Complex, which did offer compassionate care in an environment that is both safe and clean and offers mental health and many services that lay the groundwork for recovery.

Even before the analysis into Thompson’s’s dying was finished, the FCSO said it would be making numerous improvements to the prison and don’t divulge details about his health at the time of his arrest or the decisions he made regarding his right to accept or refuse medical treatment.

To tackle” the infestation of bed bugs, fleas, and other pests” in the prison, the FCSO announced that it had approved an extra$ 500,000. To lessen congestion, the sheriff’s’s practice will also email security round protocols, hire more staff for the mental wellness unit, and move more than 600 prisoners to other jails.

The lawyer for Thompson’s’s life, Harper, claimed in a Facebook post that prison records show that facility leaders, as well as health people,” noticed that Mr. Thompson was deteriorating, but did nothing to administer aid to him or to make him.”

” They literally watched his health deteriorate until he passed away ,” Harper continued. One of the detention officers refused to perform CPR when his body was discovered because, in her words, she” freaked out.” “”

Thompson’s’s life was attempted to be saved by first responders, but they were fruitless, according to USA Today.

The battery in which Thompson was kept was described by Harper as” never fit for a sick animal.”

He was hardly deserving of this. Harper continued,” Someone has to be held responsible for his loss.
