Journalist’s Murder Shocks Resort Town Outskirts
Another Journalist Killed in Mexico Amid Intensifying Drug War
On Saturday, tragedy struck once again in Mexico as another journalist lost their life in the midst of an escalating drug war. This devastating incident adds to the growing list of reporters who have been silenced, highlighting the dangers faced by those who seek to uncover the truth in this troubled country.
Nelson Matus, the director of the local news organization Lo Real de Guerrero, was fatally shot on the outskirts of Acapulco in southwestern Mexico. His courageous work involved covering the escalating violence in the Mexican state of Guerrero, a task that ultimately cost him his life.
Remarkably, Matus had already survived an assassination attempt in 2019, according to Article 19. The local authorities are currently conducting an investigation into this heinous crime.
This tragic event comes just a week after the brutal killing of another journalist in western Mexico, further emphasizing the crisis of violence and impunity that continues to plague the Mexican press, as stated by the Committee to Protect Journalists.
A Disturbing Trend
Matus’ death serves as a stark reminder of the alarming increase in journalist murders in Mexico and the toll it has taken on local newsrooms. These news organizations often provide detailed coverage of the violence, exposing themselves to great risks in the process. Matus’ newsroom was no exception.
While Acapulco was once renowned for its beach resorts, it has unfortunately transformed into a hotbed of narco violence. On the same day Matus was tragically killed, his news organization published a story about the discovery of a lifeless body near a tourist beach in the city, underscoring the grim reality they face on a daily basis.
In the past five years alone, the Committee to Protect Journalists has documented the killings of at least 52 journalists in Mexico. Last year, Mexico ranked as one of the deadliest countries in the world for journalists, second only to Ukraine.
Matus’ news organization expressed their grief on social media, extending their condolences to his family and joining together in prayer for his eternal rest.
