Should English Be The Official U.S. Language? These Two GOP Senators Think So.
Senators J.D. Vance and Kevin Cramer have introduced legislation that would declare English as the official language of the U.S. While 31 states and U.S. territories already recognize English as their official language, “The English Unity Act” would make all laws, public proceedings, regulations, publications, orders, actions, programs, and policies in English. Representatives of the federal government will also have an obligation to preserve and enhance the role of English as the official language and encourage greater opportunities for individuals to learn the English language. Vance argues that English is the language of the country and that it is long overdue for Congress to codify it as such. A similar bill in 2005 earned 64 Senate votes but was not signed into law.
The proposed bill could help restore America’s motto “E Pluribus Unum”, uniting the country under a recognized and unified language. While borders are open and the values of the culture are unclear, making English the official language could be a step in the right direction.
