Simple Observances For Lent, A Season That Can Help Christians Prepare For Persecution
Many Christians observe Ash Wednesday this week. This marks the beginning the 40-day Lenten Season that prefigures Easter’s 50 Days of Feasting and Celebration. This year Lent, three years after Western governments forbade Christians from worshipping during the Holy Week’s highest Holy Week, is especially precious to its watchers.
The wise are able to see the approaching storms and prepare for them. Culture war is a spiritual battle, which means that it must be fought using spiritual means. Fasting, prayer, repentance, increased Biblical instruction, and receiving Christ’s true Body, Blood, and Blood. Lent is about engaging in and training for spiritual warfare.
Lent is a time for repentance and other spiritual disciplines. It’s like an athlete who gives up his comfort to train to win. Saint Paul Exhortations: “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
Sure, Christians could — and should — pray hard and practice self-restraint all year. Lent, like Advent, is a recurring part in church life. It places an emphasis on spiritual discipline, which will help us grow. Regularity and habit are crucial to successful execution, as even secular self-help gurus can attest. Why are Christians observed Lent?
Lent isn’t mentioned in the Bible. There is no specific order of services or many Christian customs. For example, you cannot invoke the Trinity’s name, say any creeds, listen to any sermons, and then perform three songs, then three slow songs, then listen to the sermon. The Bible does not specifically prohibit devotional reading. Neither are prayer routines or specific Bible reading times.
There are many useful and good things that the Bible does not explicitly recommend to its people, but the historical church still recommends them. Christians can and do use their scripturally informed reason as Christians to choose which religious practices to follow and which to prioritize.
Lent is one the most important religious practices. It is an ancient Christian tradition. Before, it was a common phenomenon. The New Testament was finally completed. It has stood the test of time, been seen across cultures and through all expressions of Christianity. It is a good idea. It encourages us to honor our mothers and fathers by adhering to the Fifth Commandment.
Lent was decided by our faith parents. It is a custom and not a commandment. This means that Protestants tend to follow it more easily than Roman Catholics, the various forms.
