Six Philadelphia Phillies Died From Brain Cancer. AstroTurf Suspected Of Being The Cause.
After the death of the sixth Philadelphia Phillie, there have been suspicions that brain cancer may be a cause. “forever chemicals” They found it in Veterans Stadium’s artificial turf.
Tug McGraw (2004) and Tug Brett (2004) as well as Johnny Oates (2004), John Vukovich (2007) and David West (2022), all succumbed to glioblastoma. This is a deadly, aggressive form of brain cancer. Four souvenir AstroTurf samples were purchased by the Philadelphia Inquirer from the Stadium, which was destroyed in 2004. They were then examined by Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories Environmental Testing. These results revealed 16 types per- and multifluoroalkyl substances (aka PFAS). “forever chemicals,” Within them. Researchers at the University of Notre Dame tested other samples for PFAS and came up with two more.
“It was just sad all the way around to lose all those guys. To lose them that way,” Larry Christenson, a former Phillies pitcher told the Inquirer. “Then you start thinking, with Vuke, Darren Daulton — it opened a can of worms: ‘Whoa. Why are all of our teammates dying? Is there something that can narrow it down?'”
Jacob de Boer (an environmental chemist from the Free University of Amsterdam) was shocked to learn that six Phillies died of glioblastoma. “That is such a high number that it is worrying.”
Artificial turf may reach temperatures as high as 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and could emit gases that can be inhaled. “In the dugout, the team put boxes with ice on the stairs leading up to the clubhouse,” Bob Boone, a former Phillies catcher, was recalled. “I’d come in and see guys standing with their feet in the boxes. I used to spend my day laughing at them: ‘Getting hot out there?'”
PFA chemicals have been linked to cancer in two different studies. The first was done by researchers from China. Chinese researchers found chemicals in brain tissue, while the Italian research discovered that chemicals were also present in brain tissue of individuals who drank PFAS contaminated water.
“Once PFAS gets into [a person’s] blood, they circulate through all the organs,” Graham Peaslee from the University of Notre Dame, who studied PFA compounds said. “We know that the liver is affected. We know that the kidneys are affected. We know the testicles are affected. But nobody’s ever done the study to see if the brain is affected, because glioblastoma is such a rare disease.”
Timothy Rebbeck, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “We’re never going to have a good measure of what the Phillies players were exposed to.”

“The materials used in synthetic turf have been thoroughly reviewed by both federal and state government agencies and are considered to be nonhazardous,” Melanie Taylor is the President and CEO of Synthetic Turf Council. “Going forward, our members will continue to pay close attention to evolving regulations and standards to ensure the highest safety of our products.”
Sheridan, Brett’s 34-year-old daughter, is concerned about artificial turf that kids continue to play on. “Those chemicals don’t go away,” Sie said. “Who is in contact with them now?”
