SNL lampoons Trump on DEI and egg prices in post-inauguration episode

Saturday Night Live tapped its cast member James Austin Johnson to put on his Donald Trump impression for the first time since Inauguration Day.

While the comedy sketch show has poked fun at Trump since he won the election, this was its own inaugural episode, which featured Lin Manuel Miranda in his iconic Alexander Hamilton character, which Johnson interrupted with his Trump impersonation. Johnson paused a scene replicating the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence.

“What matters is the nation we build. Because in America all men are created equal,” Miranda said and began to rap. “America not England, we doing the sequel. We will have leaders but know one thing: in America we will never have a king.”

“Never say never,” Johnson said as Trump. “Kidding, of course, though in many ways I’m not. I’m in my king era. But just like the founding fathers, I am creating a new country as well. And just like them, we’re doing it very whitely. DEI is over. It’s dead. Workplaces must go back to looking like the TV show The Office.”

Elon Musk‘s controversial salute was also a topic of Johnson’s cold open monologue as Trump. Johnson explained, “They say he gave the Nazi salute. Not true. He was creating a new greeting. A cross between hi and hello. We’re calling it ‘heil.’

“Lin, what do you think? Did he do it? I think he did it a little bit,” Johnson said, addressing Miranda, who remained frozen in the background throughout the sketch.

Johnson took jabs at Trump in the show’s open, including jokes about the first family. He claimed Trump’s “new favorite son is Barron,” who is “smacking his head on every door frame” of the White House “like when Gandalf goes to Bilbo’s house.” Johnson referred to Melania Trump as the “surprise guest” at the inauguration who was “dressed like frankly Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat.”

“It’s been a great first week. I’ve done more in the past four years than sleepy Joe and Kamala did in the past four years. All thanks to my beautiful executive orders,” Johnson also said.

“I basically hit all my campaign promises except for the one people cared about: price of eggs. All-time high,” Johnson said with a shrug. “Who would have thought it would be easier to get a ceasefire in Gaza than bring down the price of eggs? Might have to take the ‘L’ on that one. We’re looking into fabulous alternative egg options such as seagull or perhaps Cadbury.”

Then, Johnson alluded to future episodes that will feature impersonations of Trump’s Cabinet. He joked that SNL won’t know who to cast as Trump’s Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

“What is SNL going to do? Who’s going to play Hegseth? Look at these guys back here. None of them got the build. Nobody has the jaw,” Johnson said. “Got plenty of Zuckerberg options, though. That’s going to be a fight.”

Trump is notorious for late-night social media posts criticizing SNL sketches about him. As of Sunday morning, the president hasn’t commented on the cold open segment.
