SNL star Cecily Strong reportedly withdrew from House hearing sketch on antisemitism
Former SNL Cast Member Cecily Strong Backs Out of Controversial Cold Open Skit
According to a new report, former Saturday Night Live cast member Cecily Strong felt “uncomfortable” with the cold open skit on the House congressional hearings on antisemitism on college campuses. During dress rehearsal, Strong decided not to play Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as originally planned.
New Cast Member Takes Over
In Strong’s absence, new cast member Chloe Troast stepped in to portray Stefanik in the sketch. The parody was based on a recent congressional hearing where Stefanik questioned the presidents of prestigious universities about their response to antisemitic speech on campus.
Controversy Surrounds the Sketch
Despite the serious nature of the hearing, SNL chose to focus on mocking Stefanik rather than addressing the issue of antisemitism. The sketch received backlash from social media and various news outlets.
Strong Replaced by Troast
“I am here today because hate speech has no place on college campuses,” Troast’s Stefanik declared in the sketch. “Hate speech belongs in Congress, on Elon Musk’s Twitter, in private dinners with my donors, and in public speeches by my work husband, Donald Trump.”
Public Outcry
The skit was heavily criticized, with Barstool Sports calling it “one of the worst cold openings in the show’s history.” Meghan McCain described it as “vile,” pointing out the rise in antisemitic hate crimes. Fox News host Jeanine Pirro criticized SNL for choosing to mock Stefanik instead of condemning antisemitism.
Overall, the controversial skit sparked a heated debate about the boundaries of comedy and the responsibility of satire in addressing sensitive issues.
