DeSantis proposes altering retirement eligibility for Social Security.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis Supports‍ Changes to Social⁢ Security ⁤for Millennials

Republican presidential ⁢contender and ⁤Gov. ⁣Ron ⁣DeSantis‍ (R-FL) believes in making‌ changes⁢ to Social Security ⁣for ⁤millennials ⁣and younger ⁢generations.‌ However, he emphasizes‌ the importance‍ of ⁢protecting ⁣current seniors from⁤ any alterations ‌to the ‍program.

During his time⁤ in ⁢the ‍House of ⁢Representatives, DeSantis advocated ⁢for raising the retirement age to 70 ⁤and privatizing⁢ the⁢ program. ‍Despite this, he assures that he ⁢will‍ prioritize ‌the well-being⁤ of seniors.

“I’ve always said,⁢ ‘Promise made, promise kept.’ I’m a ‌governor of Florida. Of course, we’re ‌going to‌ protect people’s Social ⁤Security,” the⁢ governor said on Fox News.‌ “My ⁤grandmother passed away when she was ‍91.⁣ That⁤ was her ‍sole source ‌of income. And that’s true for⁣ millions⁢ of ‌seniors.‍ … So when⁢ people say that‌ we’re gonna somehow cut‍ seniors, ⁢that ‍is‌ totally ‌not true.”

DeSantis ⁣acknowledges ⁤the‌ need for discussions ‍on⁣ making changes ⁢for‍ individuals in their 30s and 40s⁢ to ⁤ensure the program’s ⁤viability. Experts ⁣have ⁣warned ⁢that without ‌any ⁣adjustments, the‍ trust fund‍ for Social Security will be depleted by 2034. While⁢ this depletion‍ would not ⁢halt benefit payments,⁢ it‍ would reduce the⁣ amount received by‍ recipients.

AARP predicts that⁤ if the trust‌ fund is depleted, the ‍program would only be able‍ to ⁤pay‌ approximately ”80% of the benefits to which ⁤retired and disabled workers are ‍entitled.”

The current‍ retirement age in the ⁣United‌ States is 67, but individuals can⁣ choose to retire⁢ early⁣ at 62 ⁣or ⁣delay‌ retirement ⁣until 70 ⁤to receive higher benefits.
