Social Security update: Direct payment worth $914 arriving in one day

Supplemental Security Income May Payment

If you’re a Supplemental Security Income beneficiary, you’ll be happy to know that your May payment is on its way! The payment, which is worth $914 for individual filers, will be disbursed on Friday.

Payment Amounts

  • Individual filers: $914
  • Eligible couples: $1,371
  • Essential persons: $458

Essential persons are those who live with someone receiving SSI payments and provide them with necessary care.

Money Management: Seven Steps You Should Take If You Lose Your Job

Beneficiaries typically receive their payments on the first day of each month, but when the first day falls on a weekend or holiday, the payments are issued on the last business day before the month begins. This adjusted schedule ensures that beneficiaries still receive 12 checks per year, even though some months receive two checks and some receive none.

There are multiple months this year in which two payments will be delivered in the same month: March, June, September, and December. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend in April, July, and October, and the first of January is always a holiday.

Since January 1974, the SSA has been issuing SSI payments, and payment rates have increased for cost-of-living adjustments since 1975.
