Social Security update: Direct payment worth $914 to be issued in 30 days

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries are slated to receive their next monthly payment at the start of May, the Social Security Administration said. It is one of the 12 payments that SSI recipients get in a year. On the first business day of the month, these payments are sent out to the recipients. When the first falls on weekends or holidays, the checks are sent out the last business day of the previous month (source).

Apart from eligible couples, other groups can qualify for this payment. Couples receive $1,371, while critical people who provide essential care to SSI beneficiaries receive a $458 check.

SSI beneficiaries did not receive any payment in April. They received two payments in March, one on March 1 and the other on March 31. The latter payment served as April’s pay because April 1 falls on a Saturday this year.

SSI payments were first issued in January 1974, and the amount recipients had been receiving have increased for cost-of-living adjustments each year since 1975, as the agency noted.

The direct payments for SSI beneficiaries are distinct from the retirement pay that retirees receive monthly.
