Social Security update: Second direct payment worth $914 of March’s double checks to arrive in nine days
The Social Security Administration is set to release the second of two Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for March, totaling up to $914 each for individual filers. The payment will be disbursed on Friday, March 31st to take the place of April’s payout because April 1st falls on a Saturday this year. Eligible recipients received the first disbursement of the month’s regular payments on March 1st.
Because there are two disbursements in March, individual recipients should have received a total of $1,828 in the month. SSI payments are typically released once a month, and are given out on the first of every month. However, when the first day falls on a weekend or holiday, the administration will release the checks on the last business day of the previous month.
The Social Security Administration will pay out two checks in a single calendar month several times a year, but beneficiaries will still receive a total of 12 payments per year. Recipients will see double payments in June, September, and December, with December being a double payment month every year because of the holiday. Other groups who may qualify for the double payment include eligible couples and those who live with and care for an SSI recipient.
Supplemental payments are separate from retirement payouts that retirees receive each month from Social Security. The first SSI payments were given out in January of 1974, and payment rates have increased for cost-of-living adjustments each year since 1975.
The Social Security Administration always releases a payment schedule each year, so eligible beneficiaries are aware of when they can expect to receive their payments. Any updates, including the issuance of direct deposit and special communications to beneficiaries, are also noted on the administration’s website.
