Some McCarthy Dissenters to Land Top Posts
Republican lawmakers who obstructed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s path To the gavel secured broad concessions to their demands for how the House should conduct business.
But some of them will reap personal rewards for agreeing to support McCarthy’s speakership bid, or at least for switching their votes from “no” to “present.”
GOP RULES AND CHANGES ARE A HODGEPODGE of GOOD, BAD, and THE MISGUIDED
Individual benefits given to members who did not vote for McCarthy in the first 14 rounds could cause tension with those who voted.
For at least a few, such as Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX), McCarthy’s horse-trading yielded a rules package that they found hard to swallow.
Gonzales declared Sunday that McCarthy should not be allowed to leave “the insurgency caucus take hold and dictate” How to begin the 118th Congress.
Others lawmakers who voted for McCarthy on every election could also be rewarded for their loyalty.
DONALDS FOR STEERING
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) landed a coveted spot on the House Steering Committee after joining conservatives in opposing McCarthy’s bid during the first rounds of voting.
Some McCarthy dissenters supported Donalds on multiple ballots, despite Donalds’ inability to push for speaker status.
Donalds confirmed publicly that he was granted a seat on the powerful Steering Committee in the course of the negotiations. The Steering Committee is responsible for assigning committee members to the House. This was a demand made by the conservative House Freedom Caucus several months prior to the speaker vote.
Donalds stated that he was present on the committee to express his gratitude “to make sure that the entire conference, you know, the ideological spectrum if you will, is represented through all committees.”
THREE CONSERVATIVES MAKE THE RULES
McCarthy stated to Freedom Caucus members: Three Freedom Caucus members may sit on the House Rules Committee. It is the panel that decides which bills will be brought up for consideration and when.
The fate of the three remaining members remained elusive late Monday afternoon, according to a source familiar with the talks. Washington Examiner.
But whoever joins the Rules Committee will wield influence over legislative priorities — and conservatives have voiced a particular interest in waging wars against government spending.
RUMORED MOVES
Speculation is swirling around the posts that some of McCarthy’s most vocal critics may have landed as a result of relenting during the speaker race.
Unconfirmed reports Please suggest Rep. Matt Gaetz (R.FL) may have pushed for and received the givel of a subcommittee to the House Armed Services Committee. He currently serves on that committee.
According to other sources, Lauren Boebert (Republican from Colorado) could also be offered a spot on high-profile House Judiciary Committee. Reports.
Gaetz, Boebert and others positioned themselves as the face of McCarthy’s opposition, even though Scott Perry (R – PA) was the House Freedom Caucus Chairman. However, much of substantive negotiating for conservatives was done by Scott Perry (R – PA).
ELEVATED LOYALISTS
Conservative members who lent McCarthy’s speaker bid credibility at a time when it was flagging are poised to benefit from the new speaker’s generosity as well.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R.OH) will likely be appointed to a prominent role as the head of the subcommittee that investigates. “the weaponization of government,” McCarthy promised to form this group as part of the deal with conservatives.
Jordan consistently supported McCarthy, despite being nominated by the dissenters.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-GA, reportedly might have Earned back After Democrats and a few of her GOP friends voted to remove her from committee posts during the previous Congress due to her controversial past statements, she was allowed to continue to serve on the congressional committees.
Taylor Greene, like Jordan, voted with Freedom Caucus members in support of McCarthy right from the beginning.
NO PAY-BACK TIME
McCarthy agreed not to retaliate to those members who initially refused support, sources familiar with the matter said. Washington Examiner.

It means that McCarthy could not take away any of these positions even though he did not direct reward the dissenters.
One participant in the talks said that the whole deal wouldn’t have worked if McCarthy hadn’t pledged not to pursue the side that asked.
