Son of ‘Snow White’ director criticizes Disney’s live-action remake, claims it dishonors his father and Walt Disney’s legacy.
The Son of the Original “Snow White” Director Slams Disney’s Live Action Remake
The son of the original “Snow White” director has expressed his concerns about Disney’s upcoming live action remake, stating that it has the potential to “destroy” the legacy of the film.
David Hand, who shares the same name as his father, the director of the 1937 animated classic, spoke out against the remake. His comments come in response to lead actress Rachel Zegler’s criticism of the original animation, calling it ”extremely dated” and claiming that the new version of Snow White will not rely on the prince to save her. Zegler also accused Snow White of falling in love with “a guy who literally stalks her.”
Leaked photos from the set have also revealed changes to the seven dwarfs, who are now being portrayed as ”magical creatures” in an effort to avoid reinforcing stereotypes.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Hand, who worked as a designer for Disney in the 1990s, expressed his disappointment with the updates, stating that both his father and Walt Disney would be “turning in their graves” over the “insulting” changes.
“I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,” Hand said. “I think it’s pathetic that people feel that way… these are art forms in the world of film today.”
Hand further criticized Disney for rewriting classic stories and altering the thought processes of the characters. He believes that the studio should focus on creating new films instead of remaking the classics.
“There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves,” Hand added.
The backlash against Disney’s remake is not unique to Hand, as many other critics have expressed similar concerns. They urge the studio to come up with original ideas and characters instead of attempting to destroy beloved classics.
“Snow White” is set to be released in March 2024.
