Soros-funded DA hires partner for high-paying job.
Pamela Price’s Controversial Relationship and Charges of Nepotism
A George Soros-backed district attorney in California is facing potential recall after it was revealed that she gave her boyfriend a high-paying position in her office, funded by taxpayers.
Alameda County district attorney Pamela Price, who received $130,000 from Soros for her failed 2018 bid, hired her boyfriend Antwon Cloird as a “senior program specialist” without disclosing their relationship. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Cloird receives a salary of $115,502 per year.
Price’s decision to hire her boyfriend has raised concerns of nepotism and violated California’s employment policies. Will Swaim, the president of the California Policy Center, stated, “In a county overrun by criminals… it’s not entirely surprising that the DA herself appears to be flouting the law.”
Since becoming district attorney, Price has faced criticism for her handling of crime in Oakland, the county’s largest city. She has made controversial decisions, such as making gang members eligible for parole, reducing a triple murderer’s sentence, and giving a lenient sentence to a teen linked to three killings.
Cloird’s past record has also come under scrutiny. He was involved in alleged ”pay to play” arrangements in Richmond, California, where he sought money from businesses in exchange for expediting permits. The FBI investigated these allegations but did not charge him.
Pamela Price’s spokesperson defended the hiring of Cloird, stating that he is a valued member of the team with a distinguished record of work in the Bay Area.
This is not the first instance of a Democratic politician hiring their partner using taxpayer or campaign funds. Rep. Cori Bush and Rep. Ilhan Omar have also faced criticism for similar actions.
