Soros family supports Pramila Jayapal’s reelection with generous contributions.
Left-wing billionaire George Soros supports Rep. Pramila Jayapal despite controversy
Left-wing billionaire George Soros and his son Alex Soros have made significant campaign donations to Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), despite recent criticism of her anti-Israel rhetoric. According to second quarter filings, the Soroses each contributed $6,600 to Jayapal’s campaign on June 29.
Jayapal faced backlash from fellow Democrats after stating at a progressive event in Chicago that she believes “Israel is a racist state.” Many House Democrats condemned her comments as “dangerous and antisemitic.” Jayapal has since attempted to clarify her remarks and apologize.
George Soros and his support for anti-Israel causes
These donations shed light on George Soros’ ongoing financial support for campaigns and nonprofit organizations that seek to delegitimize Israel. In 2020, the Soros-backed Foundation to Promote Open Society granted $250,000 to the Alliance for Global Justice, an anti-Israel charity in Arizona that has been linked to Palestinian terrorism.
Additionally, the foundation donated $25,000 to Democracy for the Arab World Now, which recently launched a campaign pressuring the U.S. government to revoke a visa for a top Israeli official. While some left-leaning groups argue that criticism of Soros amounts to antisemitism, considering his Jewish heritage and survival of the Nazi-Hungary occupation, others, such as the Anti-Defamation League, disagree.
“The Soros family and its massive network of nonprofits have long been some of the biggest funders of anti-Semites and Israel-haters in the world, surpassed only by a few oil kingdoms,” said Scott Walter, president of Capital Research Center, a conservative investigative think tank. “This gives the lie to claims that it’s anti-Semitic to criticize Soros.”
Jayapal’s attempt to clarify her remarks
In response to the controversy, Jayapal stated that she was trying to “defuse a tense situation” at the Chicago event and offered apologies to those she may have hurt with her words.
The nonprofit group Netroots Nation, which organized the event, has received grants from organizations such as Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Demand Justice. It has also received funding from the Foundation for Middle East Peace, which has equated Israel to an “apartheid” state and condemned Israel’s government for classifying Palestinian activist hubs as terror organizations.
Despite the support from Soros, Jayapal’s Democratic colleagues issued a joint statement calling her remarks about Israel “unacceptable.” They emphasized their commitment to the longstanding bipartisan consensus supporting the U.S.-Israel relationship.
Conservative voices criticize Soros and his supporters
Conservative advocates, such as Hayden Ludwig, policy research director for Restoration of America, argue that the Soroses’ support for Jayapal aligns with their shared ideology that “loathes Israel and the United States in equal measure.” Ludwig also challenges progressives who claim that criticism of Soros is antisemitic, stating that Americans won’t be fooled by their attempts to have it both ways.
Neither Jayapal’s campaign nor a spokesperson for Soros responded to requests for comment.
“As you know, OSF is a 501(c)(3) organization and does not make political contributions,” said Jonathan Kaplan, a spokesman for the Open Society Foundations.
