South Carolina effort to mirror Trump DEI ban advances to state Senate –

The South Carolina House has advanced legislation (H.3927) aimed at eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at the state level, mirroring the approach taken by former President Donald Trump, who issued executive orders to abolish similar initiatives in federal government upon his return to office. the bill was approved with a vote of 82-32 and seeks to prevent public entities, including schools and government contractors, from employing DEI programs or hiring practices. State Republicans have emphasized that the legislation aligns with Trump’s policies on DEI, framing it as a “trump-style” initiative. The bill is now set to be considered by the state Senate, where Republicans hold a strong majority. If passed, south Carolina will become the first state to enact a law reflecting Trump’s anti-DEI mandate. The state Senate has until May 8 to pass the legislation before it reaches Governor Henry McMaster, a Trump ally.

South Carolina effort to mirror Trump DEI ban advances to state Senate

South Carolina lawmakers in the state House have pushed forward legislation that would eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at the state level.

President Donald Trump made eliminating DEI programs in the federal government one of his first actions when he returned to the White House in January, signing executive orders doing such. His administration has also threatened to withhold federal funding to states and entities that do not comply with the order.

H.3927 passed in the Palmetto State’s House earlier this week, which would prevent public entities, including schools and government contractors, from using DEI programs or hiring practices. The bill references Trump’s January executive order doing such in the federal government. It was approved by the lower chamber of the state legislature, 82-32.

Republicans have openly touted the legislation as following the president’s lead on DEI.

“This is very much aligned with Trump’s executive order,” GOP state Rep. Steven Long said, according to Greenville News.

The South Carolina House GOP Caucus called the legislation a “Trump-style” DEI ban in a post celebrating the bill on X.

“@realDonaldTrump took bold action to end DEI in the federal government — and now SC is the first to follow his lead and make it state law. Our bill mirrors Trump’s EO and ends illegal DEI mandates in state government, education, and public contracts—eliminating race-based preferences, forced ideology, and identity-based discrimination,” the post said.

The bill now heads to the South Carolina Senate for consideration. Republicans also hold a commanding majority in the state Senate.

If the legislation is signed into law, South Carolina would be the first state to mirror Trump’s anti-DEI executive order, even as other GOP-led states have banned the practice of DEI in recent years.

The state Senate has until the end of the regular session on May 8 to pass the legislation and send it to Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC), an ally of Trump.
