South Carolina Lawmaker Proposes “Yankee Tax” on New Residents From North

South Carolina state Senator Stephen Goldfinch proposed a bill that was referred to as the “Yankee tax,” That would require new residents paying up to $500 in order to move to the Palmetto State. 

If the state referendum passes, residents who move from outside of South Carolina to South Carolina will be required to pay $250 for a new driver’s licence and $250 for a new license. Vehicle registrations.

Fox News Digital spoke with Senator Goldfinch about the fact that the proposal does not seek to prevent people from moving from outside of their state. It is only intended to allow new residents to come to the area. “catch up with the rest of us.”

“I’m not trying to build a wall and this is not a fee against new residents it’s a fee for people to catch up with the rest of us,” Fox News Digital interviewed Goldfinch.

The additional $250 tax revenue would be used to fund the following projects: The state’s infrastructure including roads, bridges and common community spaces. 

“I think there’s a rational basis for requiring newcomers to catch up with the rest of us and contribute to the roads, bridges, schools and green spaces that we’ve [residents] always contributed to,” Goldfinch was shared with Fox News Digital.

He proposes it after hearing from thousands. From the northeast Recent years have seen a lot of people move to South Carolina. The U.S. Census reports that nearly half a million people have moved to South Carolina in the last decade.

People moved to the southeast to escape the pandemic. They stayed because of a variety of reasons, including lower taxes and work flexibility.

“Our quality of life has been diminished by the almost 4 million people that have moved here in the last decade.” Goldfinch shared.  “And we anticipate another million people moving here in the next decade. Everybody is concerned about their quality of life.”

Sen. Goldfinch said that, despite the tax being levied on newcomers to the country, he doesn’t think the additional $250 or $500 will deter people from moving to the United States. South Carolina:.

“I find it hard to believe that $250 is going to dissuade anybody from coming.” Goldfinch was shared with Fox News Digital. 

Goldfinch shared the news that the New Resident fee referendum would be open for debate next week on South Carolina’s Senate floor. It will be up for vote in the 2024 general elections by counties if it is passed.

Similar legislation is not unique to South Carolina. California and New York both proposed legislation to tax taxpayers You can leave the state.

“If you can charge people to leave, I don’t see any reason why you can’t charge somebody to come in the door.” Goldfinch stated.
