Kevin McCarthy highlights conservative victories in tentative debt ceiling deal.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Touts Conservative Victories in Last-Minute Debt Agreement
“Maybe it doesn’t do everything for everyone, but this is a step in the right direction that no one thought that we would be able to today,” McCarthy said. “I’ll debate this bill with anybody. Is it everything I wanted? No, because we don’t control all of it. But it is the biggest rescission in history. It is the biggest cut Congress has ever voted for in that process.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is celebrating a last-minute agreement that prevented the U.S. from defaulting on its debt. In an interview with Shannon Bream on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” McCarthy highlighted the victories that conservatives secured over the weekend, including significant spending cuts.
Impressive Agreement Despite Biden’s Refusal to Negotiate
Despite President Joe Biden’s refusal to negotiate, Republicans were able to secure an agreement that McCarthy called “a step in the right direction that no one thought that we would be able to today.”
McCarthy also noted that the agreement was especially impressive considering the circumstances. “Maybe it doesn’t do everything for everyone, but it is the biggest rescission in history. It is the biggest cut Congress has ever voted for in that process,” he said.
Historic Reductions in Spending and Consequential Reforms
During a press conference with reporters, McCarthy emphasized the agreement’s historic reductions in spending and consequential reforms that will lift people out of poverty and rein in government overreach. He also assured the public that there would be no new taxes or government programs.
Vote to Be Held on Wednesday
McCarthy expects the text of the bill to be posted on Sunday, with a vote to be held on Wednesday. However, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that the federal government could default on June 5 if an agreement isn’t finalized.
