Speaker McCarthy Vows Action After Trump Claims He Is Being Arrested On Tuesday

Kevin McCarthy, the House Speaker (Republican-California), responded to the tweet by former President Donald Trump stating that he would be arrested in the early part of next week. He also promised to have congressional committees investigate whether federal funding was involved.

“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” McCarthy spoke. “I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions.”

McCarthy’s remarks follow Trump’s announcement on Saturday morning on social media that he would be detained on Tuesday.

“ILLEGAL LEAKS FROM A CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE, WHICH HAS ALLOWED NEW RECORDS TO BE SET IN VIOLENT CRIME & WHOSE LEADER IS FUNDED BY GEORGE SOROS, INDICATE THAT, WITH NO CRIME BEING ABLE TO BE PROVEN, & BASED ON AN OLD & FULLY DEBUNKED (BY NUMEROUS OTHER PROSECUTORS!) FAIRYTALE, THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK,” Trump posted to his social media platforms. “PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!”

A former president and current White House candidate would face arrest, even though the underlying misdemeanor is only six years old. Trump is expected to be charged with a felony by his lawyers. They will argue that the alleged crime was committed in order to hide an illegal contribution to the campaign, which some legal experts consider to be a weak charge.

The remarks from Trump come after a report from NBC News said federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies were analyzing security assessments and making plans to prepare for the possibility that Trump could be indicted next week by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with a $130,000 hush money payment he allegedly made to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The case centers on an alleged payment that Michael Cohen (ex-Trump attorney) made to Daniels in order to conceal rumors about a 2006 tryst between Trump & Daniels. Cohen pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time in prison.

Trump’s company reimbursed Cohen for his non-disclosure agreement, which is legal. The company listed the payment as a legal expense, and cited a retainer agreement that Cohen had signed. The retainer agreement didn’t exist, and the reimbursement wasn’t related to any legal services provided by Cohen. This leads to a possible misdemeanor criminal conviction for falsifying records in business. According to the report, Trump signed several checks to Cohen during his presidency.

If the prosecution can prove that Trump committed the offense, they may make it a felony. “‘intent to defraud’ included an intent to commit or conceal a second crime.”

Prosecutors claim that the second crime was that $130,000 of hush money was an illegal donation to Trump’s campaign. The money was used to stop stories for Trump’s benefit.
