Jack Smith, Special Counsel, Returns to America To Lead Investigations Into Trump
Jack Smith, the Special Counsel, is reported to be back in the United States Former President to be investigated Donald Trump After serving as a prosecutor in The Hague.
Attorney General Merrick Garland Taped SmithFormer war crimes prosecutor to serve as special counsel for the Department of Justice investigation into Trump. Smith accepted the position, but was initially kept back at The Hague in The Netherlands after he had been involved in a bike accident.
Since his appointment, he has returned to the United States several weeks later. The exact date of his return is not known as the Justice Department has not announced it. The Washington Post. People familiar with Smith’s travels told the Post that Smith had been back in the U.S. “for some time.”
Garland appointed After Trump announced his third run for the presidency at Mar-a-Lago’s November event, Smith will be Smith’s special counsel.
“The department of Justice has long recognized that in certain, extraordinary cases, it is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution,” Garland stated. “Based on recent developments, including the former president’s announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election and the sitting president’s intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public’s interest to appoint a special counsel.”
“Appointing a special counsel at this time is the right thing to do. The extraordinary circumstances presented here demand it. Mr. Smith is the right choice to complete these matters in an even handed and urgent manner,” He concluded.
Trump could be facing criminal prosecution for two DOJ investigations. The investigation into the January 6 events focuses on whether Trump incited insurrection or attempted to illegally interfere in the certification of 2020 election. This investigation led to hundreds of criminal prosecutions against protesters who entered America’s Capitol.
Trump is also being investigated for a trove containing documents that were found by the FBI in an August raid at Mar-a-Lago. Garland said that Trump may face potential charges regarding the holding of these documents and obstruction of federal investigations.
Smith, the special counsel to Trump, will decide if he is guilty of any offenses related to either investigation.
