NRSC criticizes crowded Dem Senate primaries.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee Criticizes Democratic Primaries
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) took aim at their Democratic counterparts on Monday, highlighting the latest group of candidates entering Democratic primaries for crucial general election races.
Challenging Centrist Rep. Elissa Slotkin
Hill Harper, a progressive actor renowned for his roles in The Good Doctor and CSI: NY, made an announcement on Monday. He revealed his plans to challenge centrist Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in her bid to succeed retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) next year. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), who chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, previously stated that it was too early to determine if the committee would intervene in the state’s primary.
The NRSC highlighted the contrast in strategy between Republicans and Democrats. While Republicans actively work to recruit the most electable candidates in swing states, Democrats face contentious primaries.
NRSC Spokesman’s Statement
“In must-win races across the country, Senate Democrats are staring down brutal primaries as their top recruits race to see who can get further to the left,” said NRSC spokesman Philip Letsou in a statement on Monday. “It’s no wonder most self-respecting recruits decided to just sit this cycle out entirely.”
In Texas, Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) now faces Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez in the Senate Democratic primary to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) bid for a third term. Allred has demonstrated impressive fundraising numbers, raising $6.2 million in the second quarter of 2023.
However, political observers in Texas believe that Gutierrez could pose a significant challenge, potentially preventing Allred from accumulating a substantial war chest for the upcoming costly general election battle.
In the contest to block Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) from securing a second term, Democrats have yet to unite behind a candidate. Missouri state Sen. Karla May recently became the third candidate to enter the state’s 2024 Democratic Senate primary, joining Wesley Bell, a St. Louis prosecutor, and Marine veteran Lucas Kunce, the runner-up in last year’s primary contest to replace retired Missouri GOP Sen. Roy Blunt in the 2024 election.
