Recent claims of Haitian immigrants stealing and eating the pets of Springfield residents have circulated online and thrust the city into the media spotlight.
City officials have denied the unfounded claims, however, they were repeated by former President Donald Trump during his debate against Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday.
“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” Trump said during the debate.
“What they have done to our country by allowing these millions and millions of people to come into our country and looking for — it’s happening in the towns all over the United States,” he added.
Springfield has seen some resources overwhelmed by the influx of Haitian migrants in recent years, but claims of pets being eaten have been flatly denied by local officials.
