Democrat Bowman criticizes Biden for negotiating with GOP ‘terrorists’ on debt crisis.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman Criticizes President Biden’s Approach to Debt Ceiling Talks

“I’m very frustrated,” says Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a member of the “Squad,” in response to President Biden’s decision to work with congressional Republican leaders on the debt ceiling talks. Bowman calls on the president to use the 14th Amendment as an option to avoid discussions with GOP leaders.

“I mean, we don’t negotiate with terrorists globally. Why are we gonna negotiate with the economic terrorists here that are the Republican Party?” Bowman continued.

Biden and Democrats have called for a “clean” debt ceiling increase that does not address spending, while Republicans passed a bill in the House that would crack down on spending and raise work requirements for social welfare programs.

Some Democrats, including Bowman, have been critical of the Republican plan and called on Biden to use the 14th Amendment as an option to avoid discussions with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other GOP leaders.

However, the White House said on Thursday that the “only option” in terms of avoiding a default on the United States’s debt is to negotiate with Congress and find a compromise.

What’s Next?

The House is headed into recess for Memorial Day, with expectations that the lower chamber will be called back early next week to vote on a revised debt ceiling bill. Biden and Republicans have said the negotiations are moving in a positive direction but still stand far apart on main points, including work requirements and spending.

The U.S. is expected to default on its debt as early as June 1. Stay tuned for updates.
