Stanford President steps down due to manipulated research.

Stanford University President ⁢Resigns Amidst⁣ Manipulated Data Scandal

‍ ⁣ Marc Tessier-Lavigne

Stanford⁢ University’s president, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, is stepping down following an internal report that ⁢revealed‌ his failure to⁤ promptly ‍correct⁣ five papers ‍containing ⁢manipulated data.

The university initiated an investigation into Tessier-Lavigne ⁢after allegations arose regarding the‍ manipulation ‌of⁣ data in ‌some‍ of his papers. While ⁢stanford.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/07/Scientific-Panel-Final-Report.pdf” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>the⁤ report‌ did not find evidence⁣ of Tessier-Lavigne’s ‌direct⁤ involvement in the manipulation, it criticized‍ his failure to correct the⁣ scientific record when given the opportunity on multiple occasions.

This scandal has posed a significant ‍challenge‌ to Stanford under Tessier-Lavigne’s leadership. In one ‍incident, law ‌school students ⁣violated the university’s ⁣free‌ speech policies ‍by disrupting a talk⁣ by a ⁢conservative ⁢federal judge. ⁢The Washington Free Beaconreported that diversity ‌dean ‌Tirien⁤ Steinbach supported ‍the students, accusing⁢ the ⁣judge ⁣of causing ⁣harm.

In response, Tessier-Lavigne and law⁢ school dean Jenny Martinez ⁣issued a formal apology⁤ to⁣ the judge and placed⁢ Steinbach on leave.

Furthermore, Martinez announced mandatory free⁤ speech training ‌for students. ‍However, ⁣an investigation by the Free Beaconrevealed that the‌ training was ineffective, requiring‌ minimal‌ effort and⁣ allowing students ‍to easily ignore or skip‍ the required‍ videos.

Tessier-Lavigne has also decided to retract or provide extensive corrections for several of his⁣ peer-reviewed articles. According to the Daily, retractions are extremely rare in ⁤academia, ⁣occurring in‍ only ‌0.04 percent of research papers. Retractions typically ⁤happen when “clear evidence”⁤ emerges ⁤that‍ the⁣ findings ‌are‍ unreliable.

The report also ⁣revealed‍ that Tessier-Lavigne had a tendency to reward‌ lab ⁤workers who‌ provided favorable ‍results while punishing those‍ who struggled‍ to generate‍ such data.

Interestingly, another professor at an elite⁣ university faced similar accusations⁣ recently. ⁣A ⁣Chronicle of Higher ⁢Education⁢ report credibly accused⁢ a Harvard professor, who specializes ⁤in ⁣studying honesty, of⁢ using fraudulent data in ‌her research.
