Itzin’s son Wilke, shared a sweet message about the man that he said he was in “awe” of in a lengthy post on Instagram.
“It is with an incredibly heavy heart to announce that my father Gregory Martin Itzin has passed on,” the message read, in part. “I am so so grateful to have been able to share these last few days with my dad in the midwest where he grew up. We were able to share some incredible moments together, fishing, bonding, watching him have the opportunity to connect with his grandson Wylder in a way we were never able to do before.”
“He was able to spend quality time in a place he loved, with the people who loved him dearly,” he added. “I was able to say good bye but was truly hoping that it wasn’t true. His sister Pam held him for his last breath and I am so thankful she was able to be there with him. It was by some miracle that he was able to make it this far.”
The “NCIS” star previously had suffered a heart attack in 2015 while he was on stage during his performance of William Shakespeare’s “Falstaff,” the outlet noted.
In addition to his famed roles on various “Star Trek” shows and “24,” Itzin is known for his roles on such shows as “Big Love,” “The Mentalist,” and more. He also played roles on the big screen and appeared across from stars like George Clooney in “The Ides of March,” Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” and more.
