State Department probes reports of Americans killed, captured in Israel attack.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced that the State Department is actively investigating reports of American casualties and hostages in the recent attack on Israel by Hamas, a terrorist group.
The surprise attack launched by Hamas-linked militants in the Gaza Strip on October 7th has resulted in hundreds of deaths, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing revenge and declaring war on the terror group. There are reports suggesting that Americans may be among the casualties.
During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on October 8th, Secretary Blinken confirmed that the State Department is aware of reports regarding American casualties and is diligently working to verify them.
He stated, “Yes, we have reports that several Americans were killed. We’re working overtime to verify that.”
Furthermore, there are indications that Hamas has taken hostages, potentially including American citizens, as part of their attack.
Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, also speaking on “State of the Union,” revealed that Americans are among the “scores” of hostages currently held by Hamas.
Secretary Blinken assured that the State Department is investigating these claims and other reports of missing Americans in the aftermath of the attack.
Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7th is the most significant foreign assault on the country in decades.
In response to the situation, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed by the White House. President Biden has directed additional support for Israel in the face of this unprecedented terrorist assault by Hamas.
Secretary Blinken hinted at the likelihood of the United States providing financial and military assistance to Israel in the near future.
“We’re looking at specific additional requests that the Israelis have made—I think you’re likely to hear more about that later today,” said Secretary Blinken.
Congress in Chaos Amid Attacks
Following the attack, U.S. lawmakers wasted no time in condemning the aggression and reaffirming their support for Israel.
Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was recently ousted as speaker of the House, stated, “The United States must unequivocally stand with our ally Israel and their right to defend themselves from terrorism.”
Speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), currently leading the House in the absence of a speaker, declared, “America stands with Israel.”
He added, “The vicious attack on our most sacred ally by Hamas terrorists cannot stand. The Israeli people have our unwavering support, and the Israeli government has every right to defend its citizens against this act of war.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) echoed these sentiments, stating, “The loss of life in Israel as a result of the violent, calculated, and unprovoked attack by Hamas is heartbreaking.”
He continued, “America stands firmly and unequivocally with Israel. We will strongly support Israel’s right to defend herself from this despicable attack that targeted civilians, including Israeli children, with rockets, gunfire, and violent kidnappings.”
“The Congress must stand with Israel until the invasion by Hamas has been crushed and security in Southern Israel and throughout the country has been permanently restored,” Mr. Jeffries emphasized.
However, with the U.S. House of Representatives currently in chaos, providing congressional assistance to Israel will be delayed until a new speaker is elected next week.
As interim speaker, Mr. McHenry has limited power and cannot bring legislation to the floor.
Lawmakers have suggested passing a resolution condemning the attack, but such a move would have limited impact. Congressional options to respond to the attack are restricted until a new speaker is chosen.
Nevertheless, the top contenders for the next speaker, Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), have both expressed unwavering support for Israel.
Mr. Scalise stated, “The United States will always stand with Israel, our greatest ally in the Middle East. They must defend themselves as their citizens are slaughtered by Hamas terrorists. They have our full support and our prayers.”
Similarly, Mr. Jordan affirmed, “We must continue to support our great ally as it expels this invasion, overwhelms these extremists, and works to prevent Hamas from ever harming Israeli citizens again.”
However, due to the current circumstances in Congress, any congressional-backed support for Israel is severely limited.
