State Department Won’t Evacuate American Citizens from Sudan As Conflict Intensifies
16,000 Americans Stranded in Sudan as State Department Refuses to Evacuate
The situation in Sudan is rapidly deteriorating as fighting between military leaders intensifies. While the U.S. military has evacuated embassy officials, the State Department has made it clear that they have no plans to evacuate the 16,000 American citizens currently stranded in the country.
Undersecretary for management Ambassador John Bass stated, “As a result of that uncertain security picture, as a result of the unavailability of the civilian airport, we don’t foresee coordinating a U.S. Government evacuation for our fellow citizens in Sudan at this time or in the coming days. We don’t anticipate those security conditions are going to change in the near term.”
With over 400 people killed since the conflict began, American citizens are left with limited options for escape. The U.S. military is considering overland routes and deploying naval assets to assist those who arrive at the Port of Sudan, but there are no plans for a large-scale evacuation like the one in Afghanistan.
As the situation in Sudan continues to escalate, it is imperative that the U.S. government takes action to protect its citizens. The world is watching and waiting for a response.
