Stefanik demands CDC to dismiss ex-Cuomo official behind nursing home scandal.
House GOP Conference Chairwoman Urges CDC to Fire Former NY Health Commissioner
House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to take action against a former New York State health commissioner who oversaw the state’s deadly COVID-19 nursing home policy.
Howard Zucker, currently serving as the CDC’s deputy director for global health, previously held the position of state health commissioner under former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo during the pandemic. However, he was forced to resign amidst allegations that the administration had lied about the number of seniors who died in nursing homes due to COVID-19.
Stefanik Demands Accountability
“Disgraced, corrupt Cuomo’s health director Howard Zucker is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of New York seniors,” Stefanik expressed to Fox News. “I call on Biden’s CDC to immediately fire Howard Zucker. I will continue fighting to deliver accountability to the New York families who tragically lost loved ones because of Cuomo and Zucker.”
Zucker assumed his role at the CDC in January 2023, approximately a year and a half after his resignation in New York. During the peak of the pandemic, Zucker implemented a policy that required seniors in nursing homes across the state to return to their facilities after receiving hospital treatment for COVID-19.
Critics argue that this policy contributed to a surge in cases, an allegation that Cuomo and his team have denied. However, a report from state Attorney General Letitia James revealed that the administration had lied about the number of COVID-19-related nursing home deaths, downplaying the figures by thousands.
Other House Republicans from New York have also joined the call for Zucker’s termination and an explanation of how he was hired by the CDC following the nursing home scandal.
“Howard Zucker’s reckless, cruel, and inhumane decision-making during the pandemic caused the death of thousands of New Yorkers in nursing homes,” stated Rep. Nick Lalota (R-NY). “Zucker should be in a courtroom answering for his actions, not employed by the CDC where he can cause more harm. President Biden should give an ounce of justice to New York families and protect all Americans by firing him immediately.”
