Stefanik’s office slams SNL for mocking Rep. in anti-Semitism hearing sketch
Rep. Elise Stefanik’s Office Slams ”Saturday Night Live” for Anti-Semitic Sketch
In a scathing statement, Rep. Elise Stefanik’s (R-NY) office criticized the popular NBC sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” for its widely-panned cold open on the recent congressional hearing on anti-Semitism in colleges and universities.
Notably, Saturday’s cold open bizarrely attacked Stefanik for addressing students’ calls for Jewish genocide, while largely ignoring the university presidents who gave disastrous testimonies and led to at least one resignation.
According to Stefanik’s senior advisor, Alex DeGrasse, the congresswoman did not watch the sketch. However, her office received numerous messages from Americans across the political spectrum expressing their disgust at the “antisemitic trash” spewed by the “unfunny, morally bankrupt ‘comedians'” on SNL.
“SNL made history with the worst cold open ever because everyone knows there is absolutely no humor in the vile answers from the university presidents regarding their failure to condemn calls for the genocide of the Jewish people,” DeGrasse added.
During the hearing, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill refused to acknowledge that advocating for the genocide of Jews violates the university’s code of conduct on bullying and harassment. She resigned just hours before the SNL sketch aired.

Harvard University President Claudine Gay was also questioned about the same issue during the hearing. She responded by saying that whether advocating for the genocide of Jews violates Harvard’s codes of conduct depends “on the context.” Gay emphasized that such speech is “at odds with the values of Harvard” and violates their policies when it crosses into conduct.
The SNL sketch, however, portrayed Stefanik as unhinged for pressing the collegiate leaders on the issue, while treating those in academia with kid gloves and presenting them as reasonable.
Conservatives online swiftly criticized the sketch. Emily Zanotti, a conservative commentator, questioned how anyone could watch the hearing and think Stefanik was the appropriate target for satire. Radio host Rob Carson stated that satire must have some truth to be funny, and this sketch lacked it. Fox News host Greg Gutfeld wondered about the educational backgrounds of SNL’s writers, suggesting they may have attended Ivy League schools with neo-racist tendencies.

How can lawmakers and the public refocus the conversation on combatting anti-Semitism and holding universities accountable for their inaction in light of SNL’s misguided attempt at humor
H people,” said DeGrasse. “Instead of holding the university presidents accountable, SNL chose to target Representative Stefanik, who had the courage to address this important issue. It is deeply disappointing to see a show that claims to be comedic stoop to such low levels.”
The cold open in question featured a fictionalized version of the congressional hearing, where members of Congress questioned university presidents about their handling of anti-Semitism on campus. The sketch drew criticism for its portrayal of Stefanik, who was shown as dismissive and uninterested in the issue of anti-Semitism.
Stefanik, who has been a staunch advocate for combatting anti-Semitism, has repeatedly called for action to be taken against universities that fail to address this issue. She has been vocal about the need for university presidents to take responsibility and condemn any form of hate speech or discrimination on their campuses.
“It is disheartening to see SNL trivialize a serious issue like anti-Semitism,” said DeGrasse. “Rather than using their platform to raise awareness and promote understanding, they chose to make a mockery of the congressional hearing and attack Representative Stefanik, who has been working tirelessly to combat anti-Semitism.”
The criticism aimed at SNL is not unfounded. The sketch received backlash from viewers and lawmakers alike, who condemned the show for its insensitivity towards a topic as serious as anti-Semitism. Many have called for an apology from SNL and have expressed their disappointment in the show’s decision to target Stefanik instead of focusing on the real issue at hand.
Anti-Semitism remains a prevalent problem in institutions of higher education, and it is essential for lawmakers and the public to address this issue seriously. Comedy has often been a platform for social commentary, but in this case, SNL missed the mark. By choosing to attack Representative Stefanik instead of addressing the failures of the university presidents, the show perpetuated a harmful narrative that trivializes the issue of anti-Semitism.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to refocus the conversation on combatting anti-Semitism and holding universities accountable for their inaction. The issue at hand is too important to be overshadowed by a misguided attempt at humor.
Representative Stefanik’s office has made it clear that they will not stand by quietly while SNL misrepresents her commitment to fighting anti-Semitism. They will continue to advocate for awareness and action on this issue, in the hopes that real change can be achieved and future comedy sketches will be more responsible and sensitive to the seriousness of the topic.
In conclusion, the criticism directed at SNL for its anti-Semitic sketch targeting Representative Stefanik is well-deserved. The show’s decision to trivialize a serious issue and attack a dedicated advocate for combating anti-Semitism is disappointing and counterproductive. It is essential for all parties involved to refocus the conversation on addressing and eradicating anti-Semitism in institutions of higher education.
