Stephanopoulos, ABC News ordered to apologize, pay $15 million in Trump defamation lawsuit settlement
ABC News and its top anchor George Stephanopoulos have reached a $15 million settlement deal with President-elect Donald Trump in an agreement to drop his defamation suit and avoid a costly trial.
The settlement was filed on Saturday, with the news network agreeing to pay the money as a charitable contribution to a “Presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for Plaintiff, as Presidents of the United States of America have established in the past.” ABC News has also agreed to pay $1 million in attorney fees.
The lawsuit comes after Trump sued Stephanopoulos for comments he made in an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), during which he claimed the president-elect had been found liable for rape.
GREATEST COMEBACK? HERE’S HOW TRUMP STACKS UP IN WHITE HOUSE HISTORY
“You’ve endorsed Donald Trump for president. Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape,” Stephanopoulos said to Mace, who has frequently cited her own history as a rape victim.
Stephanopoulos was referring to Trump’s legal battle against E. Jean Carroll. However, the jury in that case had convicted Trump of being liable for sexual abuse, which holds different implications and charges under New York law.
As a result, ABC News agreed in the settlement to issue statements of regret as an editor’s note at the bottom of the online article featuring those comments.
HOW KAMALA HARRIS PLOWED THROUGH $1 BILLION
“ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC’s This Week on March 10, 2024,” the statement reads.
Stephanopoulos was adamant he would not back down from his comments, even going so far as to tell late-night host Stephen Colbert he would not be “cowed out of doing my job because of a threat.”
“Trump sued me because I used the word ‘rape,’ even though a judge said that’s in fact what did happen,” Stephanopoulos said in May. “We filed a motion to dismiss.”
Trump was not found liable for rape, but federal Judge Lewis Kaplan wrote in a ruling that although Carroll failed to prove those accusations, it does not mean that she failed to prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her, as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape.’”
The settlement comes after U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette M. Reid ordered earlier this month that both Trump and Stephanopoulos would need to attend an in-person deposition next week to file a motion for summary judgment to avoid a trial. That deadline is Dec. 24.
Trump has not yet publicly commented on the settlement.
