Stephen A. Smith tells Ro Khanna he ‘can’t complain’ after Trump’s first week – Washington Examiner
In a recent episode of “Real Talk with Bill Maher,” ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) engaged in a heated discussion about President Donald Trump’s early actions in office. smith argued that Trump’s first executive orders were aligned with his campaign promises, insisting that despite Trump’s controversial past, he has become “closer to normal” in the eyes of the American electorate. He underscored that Trump was delivering on things he pledged during his campaign.
In response, Khanna criticized Trump for failing to address essential economic issues and noted that many voters expected him to improve their lives. He expressed frustration over Trump’s celebrity status, which he believed influenced his electoral success. Smith rebutted by pointing out that leveraging celebrity and media is a necessary strategy in modern politics, as demonstrated by past Democratic successes.
The discussion highlighted the contrasting perspectives on trump’s presidency and the implications of celebrity influence in politics. While Smith expressed skepticism about Khanna’s complaints regarding Trump’s celebrity status,Khanna maintained that Trump’s immediate actions did not meet voter expectations. Despite a potential suggestion from Khanna to support Smith in a future political run, Smith dismissed the notion, stating that he prefers his current life.
Stephen A. Smith tells Ro Khanna he ‘can’t complain’ after Trump’s first week: ‘He’s closer to normal’
ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith butted heads with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) when it came to President Donald Trump‘s strategy.
Both were guests on Real Talk with Bill Maher Saturday to break down Trump’s first week in office. While Trump’s Democratic opponents lamented his first executive orders, Smith pointed out that these were merely examples of Trump’s campaign promises.
“Here’s the deal. The man was impeached twice. He was convicted on 34 felony counts. And the American people still said he’s closer to normal than what,” Smith said. “He promised you he was going to do these things. And he walked in the office, week one. And that’s exactly what he’s doing.”
“Look, I think that people voted for him because they were upset at a system where they didn’t feel that their kids’ lives were getting better,” Khanna retorted. “He said, ‘I’m going to bring the factories back. I’m going to get good-paying jobs. Your kids don’t have a future. I’m going to bring the cost of living down.’ And then he’s doing nothing. Nothing, nothing with wages, nothing with the economy. He’s putting out a meme coin.”
“I mean, he just got there. This is a week, five days,” Smith said.
Khanna went on to complain that Trump’s celebrity status helped him win. The representative implied that his stints on television shows and movies helped form a sense of humor that wins campaigns.
“But when you bring up celebrity, it’s pretty hard to make that argument when you see politicians that are on X, on Facebook, and Instagram and TikTok, because you have to reach an audience,” Smith said. “You can‘t complain about that when you‘re a Dem. When that assisted an Obama, win an election in 2008 and 2012. He utilized it, is all I’m saying.”
Smith has previously suggested he himself should have run for president because the other candidates demonstrate “insensitivity” and “lack of understanding.” At the time, Smith predicted he could have won “tens of millions of votes” for his own campaign.
However, when Khanna floated the idea that he would vote for Smith for office, the sports commentator dismissed the subject, insisting he likes his life.
