Stimulus 2023: Hundreds of thousands of Maine residents to receive $450 direct payments in weeks
Recently, nearly 880,000 Maine residents, who are eligible as per the criteria set out by the government, are set to receive $450 direct payment from the Winter Energy Relief Payments plan in the coming weeks. Governor Janet Mills announced these payments last year on Dec 6, with the objective to provide financial aid for home heating expenses during the winter season. The eligibility criteria entailed filing a 2021 tax return by Oct 31, 2022, being a full resident of Maine for the entire year of 2021, and earning $100,000 or less for individuals, $150,000 as the head of a household, and $200,000 jointly.
These eligible residents don’t need to take any further action as the government has preselected applicants based on these grounds. The payment process is expected to complete by the end of this month. Governor Mills emphasized that the measure was passed with bipartisan cooperation, as it required two-thirds support in the legislature.
Director Dan Burgess of the Governor’s Energy Office noted that Maine is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of volatile global fossil fuel markets, which caused unprecedented energy costs in the state this winter. This relief plan will help Maine people and families stay warm during these times. The government aims to aid the people back in their feet so that they can afford necessary costs, primarily in the face of inflated prices caused by inflation and high energy costs.
These payments will be sent via mail using the address provided in the 2021 Maine individual income tax return.
