A Guaranteed Income Program in New Jersey: Next Payment Coming Soon!

A guaranteed income program in the state of New Jersey is gearing up to issue its next payment in just under a week. This exciting development is set to bring much-needed financial relief to recipients who are part of the Newark Movement for Economic Equity program.

The upcoming payment, scheduled for July 1, will be worth a generous $250. Out of the 400 program recipients, 200 lucky individuals will be receiving this payment. According to the Newark mayor’s press secretary, half of the recipients receive smaller payments twice a month, while the other half receive larger payments once every six months.

“We’ve helped people to avoid eviction, supported residents in their recovery from COVID-related hospitalizations, provided funds for families to stabilize themselves during economic turmoil, and even put clothes on their kids’ backs,” stated Kevin Callaghan, the Newark philanthropic liaison.

These heartwarming efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of program participants. Detailed surveys conducted twice a year assess various aspects of their well-being, including physical health, mental health, financial security, and housing stability. The formal results of this research will be released in 2024 by our esteemed research partner, the Center for Guaranteed Income Research at the University of Pennsylvania.

According to Callaghan, the impact of the program is evident in how recipients choose to spend their funds. A remarkable 41% of residents use the money at retail stores to purchase clothing, food, and other necessities. Another 26% wisely spend their funds at grocery stores. Additionally, 10% allocate their funds towards housing and utilities, while 9% utilize the money for transportation and car expenses.

To be eligible for this life-changing program, applicants needed to be at least 18 years old and have an income that fell 200% below the federal poverty income threshold. It’s worth noting that all recipients were randomly selected, ensuring fairness and equal opportunity.

For those receiving smaller payments twice a month, mark your calendars! Payments are scheduled for the 1st and 15th of each month. On the other hand, recipients of the larger payments twice a year can expect their financial boost in May and October.
