A Guaranteed Income Program in New Jersey
A guaranteed income program in the state of New Jersey is making a positive impact on the lives of its recipients. The next payment, scheduled for Saturday, is eagerly awaited by 200 out of the 400 participants in the Newark Movement for Economic Equity program.
The payment, worth $250, provides much-needed support to individuals and families facing economic challenges. According to the Newark mayor’s press secretary, half of the recipients receive smaller payments twice a month, while the other half receive larger payments once every six months.
“We’ve helped people to avoid eviction, supported residents to get back on their feet after being hospitalized with COVID, provided funds for families to stabilize themselves during great economic turmoil, putting clothes on their kids’ backs,”
The impact of this program goes beyond financial assistance. Participants are actively involved in research conducted by the Center for Guaranteed Income Research at the University of Pennsylvania. Detailed surveys are completed twice a year, assessing various aspects of their lives, including physical and mental health, financial security, and housing stability.
Kevin Callaghan’s statement revealed that the funds received by program participants are utilized wisely. 41% of residents spend the money at retail stores, purchasing clothing, food, and necessities. Another 26% choose to spend their funds at grocery stores. Additionally, 10% allocate their funds towards housing and utilities, while 9% utilize the money for transportation and car expenses.
The payment schedule varies depending on the frequency of payments. Those receiving smaller payments twice a month can expect their funds on the 1st and 15th of each month. On the other hand, recipients of larger payments twice a year receive their support in May and October.
This remarkable program, which began in October 2021, will continue until October. It is important to note that all participants were randomly selected, ensuring fairness and equal opportunity.
