Gun ownership hits all-time high as Biden administration pushes for gun control
Record Number of Americans Report Owning Guns, Polls Show
A recent NBC News national poll revealed that a majority of respondents, 52%, said there is a gun in their household, up from previous years and a record number since the poll question’s inception in 1999.
In 2013, 42% of Americans said someone in their household owned a gun; that crept up to 46% in 2019.
“In the last ten years, we’ve grown [10 points] in gun ownership. That’s a very stunning number,” remarked Micah Roberts, from a Republican polling firm. Roberts co-conducted the poll with members of Hart Research, a Democratic polling firm. “By and large, things don’t change that dramatically that quickly when it comes to something as fundamental as whether you own a gun,” he added.
In addition to the NBC poll, a new Harvard poll showed that six in ten voters believe owning a gun is necessary for protecting themselves from criminals.
Attorney Jonathan Turley highlighted both polls while contrasting the results with the Biden White House and media allies’ push for more gun control measures.

“The Harvard poll shows that six in ten voters believe owning a gun is to protect themselves. Despite the strong anti-gun rights message from the White House and the media, the public seems to be moving significantly in the opposite direction,” Turley posted on X.
“The United States (by household) is now a majority gun-owning nation according to these polls. That could present an interesting dynamic going into the election in 2024,” he argued.
“While many rights are viewed as fairly abstract, gun ownership can give voters a tangible investment worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. Many have more than one gun. That gives them a real interest in a debate over limiting gun rights or banning weapons,” the attorney added.

President Joe Biden has made clear he’d like to ban assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and require background checks for all gun sales.

In March, Biden leveraged the carnage from a mass shooting at a Christian elementary school in Nashville to push more gun control measures and criticize Republicans.
“Those children should all be with us still,” Biden said before ripping into Republicans. “I want you to know who isn’t doing it [supporting gun control], who isn’t helping, to put pressure on them.”

Earlier that month, the president issued an executive order in an attempt to crack down on the gun industry, “moving the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.”

How do the poll results regarding gun ownership align with President Biden’s stance on gun control measures
Record Number of Americans Report Owning Guns, Polls Show
A recent NBC News national poll has revealed that a record number of Americans own guns. According to the poll, 52% of respondents said there is a gun in their household, marking an increase from previous years and the highest number since the poll question was first asked in 1999.
In 2013, only 42% of Americans reported that someone in their household owned a gun. This number has gradually increased over the years, reaching 46% in 2019.
Micah Roberts, from a Republican polling firm who co-conducted the poll with members of Hart Research, a Democratic polling firm, commented on the significant increase in gun ownership. He stated, “In the last ten years, we’ve grown 10 points in gun ownership. That’s a very stunning number. By and large, things don’t change that dramatically that quickly when it comes to something as fundamental as whether you own a gun.”
In addition to the NBC poll, a new Harvard poll has shown that six in ten voters believe that owning a gun is necessary for protecting themselves from criminals.
These poll results have been highlighted by Attorney Jonathan Turley, who pointed out the contrast between the public’s support for gun rights and the Biden White House and media’s push for more gun control measures. Turley emphasized the significance of these findings, stating, “The United States (by household) is now a majority gun-owning nation according to these polls. That could present an interesting dynamic going into the election in 2024.”
Turley further explained that gun ownership holds a tangible value for voters, as it represents a significant investment worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. He highlighted the importance of the debate over limiting gun rights or banning weapons, as it directly impacts individuals’ interests.
President Joe Biden has expressed his desire to ban assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and mandate background checks for all gun sales. However, these poll results indicate that a significant portion of the public opposes these measures.
In March, Biden used a mass shooting at a Christian elementary school in Nashville to advocate for more gun control measures and criticize Republicans. However, these efforts may not align with the sentiments of the majority of Americans who believe in protecting their rights to own guns.
The polls clearly demonstrate that gun ownership is on the rise in the United States, and it will be interesting to see how this dynamic plays out in the upcoming 2024 election. As more Americans express their support for gun rights, the debate surrounding gun control will undoubtedly continue.
