Viral video exposes potential catastrophic design flaws in Titan’s submarine.

A Navy Veteran’s Critical Analysis of the Titan Submersible

Aaron Amick, a veteran Navy sub technician and contractor, has released a video detailing what he considers to be the “ridiculous and unsafe” design decisions of the Titan submersible.

With over 20 years of experience aboard U.S. Navy submarines, Amick’s expertise lends credibility to his analysis. In his video, he thoroughly examines every aspect of the vessel, from its launchpad to its control mechanisms, to shed light on what may have happened during its final voyage.

Amick has been sharing his knowledge of submarine technology on his YouTube channel, “Sub Brief,” for the past four years. With nearly 200,000 subscribers, his latest video titled “The Titan Tragedy” is quickly approaching two million views.

One of Amick’s main concerns is the lack of monitoring and scrubbing systems for gases inside the submersible. He argues that the sub’s inability to remove toxins without surfacing and unscrewing the sealed bolts is both ridiculous and unsafe.

According to Amick, scrubbing CO2 and other gases from the submarine’s atmosphere is a critical aspect of sub design. He questions whether the sub simply kept pumping oxygen into the capsule, creating a potentially dangerous high-oxygen environment that could lead to fires.

Amick also criticizes OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush for neglecting a crucial lesson from the Apollo 1 disaster. He highlights the importance of providing a quick and easy escape route for passengers in case of emergencies, emphasizing that locking people inside a submarine without a means of self-extraction is a grave oversight.

Furthermore, Amick suspects that the submersion depth of 4,000 meters advertised on the OceanGate website may not have been properly tested. He suggests that relying solely on theoretical mathematical analysis could miss crucial factors that manual tests would catch. If the depth was indeed incorrect, the carbon fiber material used in the sub’s construction would likely have been shattered under the immense pressure of the deep sea.

Amick attributes these potential design flaws to Rush’s preference for young, inexperienced technicians. He argues that subject matter experts are essential in the design and construction process.

Another concern raised by Amick is the wireless controller used to pilot the submarine. While the fact that it is a controller is not inherently problematic, the lack of a backup plan in case of battery failure or technical issues raises significant concerns.

Amick concludes his video on a somber note, expressing his belief that these design flaws likely led to the tragic demise of the passengers. He hopes that his analysis brings closure to the families affected by the submersible’s loss.
