Newly Uncovered Document Exposes FBI’s Extensive Targeting of Traditional Catholics
The House Judiciary Committee Reveals FBI’s Targeting of Traditional Catholics Was More Widespread Than Initially Thought
The House Judiciary Committee released a document on Wednesday that contradicted earlier statements made by FBI director Christopher Wray. Wray had previously claimed that only one isolated FBI field office targeted Catholics as potential domestic terrorists. However, the newly released evidence suggests otherwise.
Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio confronted Wray with this evidence in a letter posted on the House website and shared on social media. The letter, which can be found here, highlights the fact that multiple FBI field offices across the country coordinated to produce a memo targeting traditional Catholics as domestic terrorists.

The committee attached a copy of its letter to Wray, stating that the FBI’s use of its law enforcement capabilities to infringe on Americans’ First Amendment rights is more widespread than initially suspected. This revelation raises concerns about inconsistencies in Wray’s previous testimony before the committee.
The letter cites an FBI document dated January 23, 2023, titled “Interest of Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists in Radical-Traditionalist Catholic Ideology Almost Certainly Presents New Mitigation Opportunities.” This document, which can be found here, further supports the committee’s claims.
After threats of contempt proceedings, the FBI provided a less redacted version of the document, now referred to as “the Richmond document.” This version clearly shows that the FBI’s actions were not limited to a single field office, as Wray had previously testified.
The letter concludes by demanding additional FBI documents and communications related to the case, to be provided to the committee by August 25.
In a critical opinion piece, the Wall Street Journal expressed its disapproval of the FBI’s actions. The editorial board accused the FBI of relying on unreliable sources to justify their investigation into traditional Catholics. The Journal also highlighted Wray’s claim that he was unaware of the extent of the investigation and had ordered its withdrawal from FBI systems.
It is evident that the FBI’s targeting of traditional Catholics was more widespread than initially suspected. The House Judiciary Committee’s efforts to uncover the truth and hold the FBI accountable continue.
