Summer camps now promote gender theory, trans inclusion, and critical race theory.
National Summer Camp Organizations Embrace Leftwing Theories on Gender and Race
Summer camp organizations across the country have incorporated leftwing ideologies such as gender identity theory, “trans inclusion,” and Critical Race Theory (CRT) into their practices and policies.
The American Camp Association (ACA), an organization of 10,000 summer camp professionals, has fully embraced these theories and even accredits summer camps nationwide. Their recent 2023 National conference featured sessions like “Trans Inclusion in Overnight Programs” and “Creating Belonging Through Affinity Spaces At Camp,” which focused on racially exclusive groups.
One of the session leaders, Chris Rehs-Dupin, is the founder of Transplaining for Camps, an organization that provides trainings on LGBTQIA+ inclusive practices. Their mission is to help camps create inclusive spaces for campers and staff of all gender identities and sexualities.
Another summer camp organization, the Aloha Foundation, also promotes equity and inclusion. They emphasize the importance of creating inclusive spaces for all campers and staff, including those with gender identities that do not fall into binary categories. Their approach is inspired by Transplaining.
The ACA conference also featured sessions like “Centering Equity and Justice at Summer Camp: The Kids Are Ready” and “Creating Safe and Affirming Spaces for LGBTQIA2S+ Folks at Camp.” The ACA provides resources such as checklists and gender support plans for camps, created by Gender Spectrum, an organization that advocates for child transgenderism.
Outward Bound USA, a leading provider of outdoor education programs, has also embraced leftwing ideologies. Their equity statement acknowledges the underlying structure of injustice in American society and commits to dismantling inequities. They promote terms like microaggressions and intersectionality, and encourage white allies to critical race theory.”>actively challenge institutionalized racism and white supremacy.
Camp Fire, an organization that runs teen leadership events and camps, aims to connect young people to the outdoors through inclusive and powerful experiences. They honor the contributions of Two Spirit and Indigenous people and emphasize the importance of personal pronouns and individual identity. They stand with 2SLGBTQ+ youth and advocate for social justice.
Individual camps have also adopted leftwing theories. Camp Granite Lake in Colorado allows campers and staff to live and work in cabins based on their gender identity. They respect preferred names and pronouns, regardless of parental wishes. Cheley Colorado Camps differentiates between gender and sexuality and acknowledges the history of Indigenous peoples on stolen land.
Maine’s Camp Chewonki has revised its program structure to be explicitly inclusive of the gender spectrum and uses honest language when discussing colonization. They center the stories of various farms and farmers, all with an awareness of White Supremacy Culture.
Camp Reimagined, a New York-based summer camp program, aims to build inclusive camp environments for all youth. They work towards socially and racially just, gender-inclusive spaces and collaborate with Transplaining.
There are also summer camps specifically designed for transgender or LGBT children, which have fully embraced gender theory and Critical Race Theory.
Despite these developments, the ACA, Outward Bound USA, and Camp Fire did not respond to requests for comment.
