Progressive rival urges ‘Squad’ member to give back funds from notable anti-Semites
Primary Challenger Calls on Rep. Summer Lee to Refund Campaign Contributions from Controversial Activists
Bhavini Patel, the primary challenger of Rep. Summer Lee (D., Pa.), has demanded that the “Squad” member return campaign contributions from Muslim activists known for their pro-terrorist and anti-Semitic rhetoric.
Patel specifically called out officials from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Students for Justice in Palestine, and American Muslims for Palestine, urging Lee to reject their “tainted” contributions. Notably, CAIR president Nihad Awad donated to Lee’s campaign on Dec. 29, shortly after facing criticism from the White House for expressing satisfaction with Hamas’s attack on Israel, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon.
In a statement, Patel, who serves on the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Advisory Board and was a Biden delegate in 2020, emphasized the need for Lee to distance herself from these individuals, stating, “Taking money from anti-Semites who celebrate terrorist attacks and encourage their followers to monitor synagogues is abhorrent behavior.”
Patel’s remarks shed light on the growing division within the Democratic Party regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. If elected, Patel, who is committed to advocating for “reproductive justice” and “climate action,” may find herself at odds with other progressive lawmakers. Lee and her fellow ”Squad” members have continued to criticize Israel since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, a stance that has impacted their fundraising efforts and strained their relationship with the White House.
Rabbi Daniel Fellman, the senior rabbi at Pittsburgh’s Temple Sinai, echoed Patel’s sentiments, urging Lee to promptly return the contributions and apologize for associating with these controversial individuals.
It is worth noting that Lee is scheduled to speak at the annual fundraiser for CAIR’s Philadelphia chapter next month. Additionally, she has received campaign contributions from other activists known for their anti-Semitic and pro-terrorist remarks.
Hatem Bazian, the founder of Students for Justice in Palestine, donated $2,500 to Lee on Dec. 29. Bazian has previously called for an “intifada” in the United States and propagated the false claim that the Israeli government harvests Palestinian organs.
Zahra Billoo, the head of CAIR’s San Francisco chapter, has referred to mainstream Israeli groups as “enemies,” as reported by the Free Beacon. She was removed from the board of the Women’s March in 2019 after expressing greater concern for “racist Zionists who support apartheid Israel” than for ISIS. Billoo contributed $350 to Lee’s campaign.
Osama Abuirshaid, the founder of American Muslims for Palestine, donated $500 to Lee on Dec. 29. Abuirshaid has consistently defended Hamas in the past and falsely claimed that “most” of the Israelis killed during the Oct. 7 attack were actually killed by their own army.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel group, has been actively campaigning against Lee and other progressive lawmakers critical of Israel’s response to Hamas’s terrorist attack in October. In private social media posts, Lee has referred to AIPAC as an “existential threat to the Black community.”
As of now, Lee’s campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
Should Rep. Lee refund the campaign contributions received from controversial activists, as demanded by Patel?

Beyond the issue of campaign contributions, critics have also questioned the Squad’s alignment with organizations and individuals associated with anti-Semitic beliefs and rhetoric. Several members of the Squad, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.), have faced criticism for their controversial statements regarding Israel and Jewish people.
Lee, who was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2018, has yet to respond to Patel’s demand for refunding the contributions. Her campaign spokesperson released a statement defending the donations, stating, ”Rep. Lee is grateful for the support she receives from a diverse range of individuals and organizations that share her commitment to social justice and progressive values.”
The controversy surrounding campaign contributions highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in political fundraising. As the 2022 midterms approach, voters will likely scrutinize candidates’ financial ties to ensure their representatives align with their values and principles.
Additionally, this incident raises broader questions about the role of money in politics and the influence it can wield over elected officials. Candidates must be cautious and diligent in vetting their donors to maintain their integrity and avoid potential conflicts of interest.
Furthermore, the episode emphasizes the need for robust ethical guidelines and clear standards when it comes to accepting campaign contributions. Political parties and candidates should establish criteria that maintain the integrity of their campaigns and ensure they do not compromise their values or principles by accepting donations from controversial individuals or organizations.
In a time of increasing polarization and divisive rhetoric, it is crucial for elected officials to foster unity and represent the interests of all their constituents. By exercising discernment in accepting campaign contributions, lawmakers can cultivate trust and demonstrate their commitment to upholding high standards of public service.
As the primary challenger in her district, Patel’s demand for Rep. Lee to refund campaign contributions from controversial activists serves as a reminder that elected officials must be accountable to the public and carefully consider the sources of their funding. This incident also underscores the ongoing debate within the Democratic Party regarding its stance on Israel and the importance of ideological coherence within political movements.
In the ever-evolving landscape of American politics, the role of campaign contributions and the scrutiny they face will continue to be vital in ensuring the integrity and credibility of our elected representatives. It is incumbent upon candidates to navigate this landscape with transparency and ethical responsibility, prioritizing the interests of their constituents above all else.
