Sununu on 2024 decision: ‘If you’re not a team player, you don’t deserve to be in this business’

Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said the Republican Party must look at the 2024 election in light of “team wins.”

While speaking with Sunday Night in America With Trey Gowdy, Sununu said he is not opposed to his own 2024 presidential bid but has yet to make a decision.

“My mission right now is to make the party bigger and to show a better sense of itself. I want these young disenfranchised voters — young, disenfranchised Republicans that have left the party to get back on the team. I want independents to get back on the team,” Sununu said. “I want folks to realize while we have a great product of limited government and local control and low taxes and all these great things, we tend to lead with things that tick people off and drive them away.”

“I’m trying to show the best opportunity for Republicans. If that means me getting on the stage and I can do that in the best way, I’m going to do it. I think that would be a lot of fun,” the governor continued. “If I can be a better helper and more of a team player by helping other candidates, I’m going to do that as well… It’s really about where we can best have team wins for the party. If you’re not a team player, you don’t deserve to be in this business at this level.”

Sununu warned that if the GOP field becomes overcrowded, former President Donald Trump could win the Republican nomination but lose in the final election.

The New Hampshire governor also said every candidate should show up to debate, slamming Trump’s recent indication that he may opt out.

“It’s one thing to say you’re a fighter, but how can you say you’re a fighter if you’re not willing to get into the ring,” Sununu said. “I understand a lot of Republicans want to support him because he is getting beat up by the DA that is a politically driven — I agree with all of that — but you don’t support former President Trump at the expense of elections, at the expense of Senate candidates or governor candidates, or the opportunity to bring good government.”

“He’s going to have to stand on the debate stage and make that case for himself,” Sununu added.

Sununu has been critical of Trump, saying the former president “drags the ticket down” for Republicans’ 2024 bid to retake the White House.
