Sununu vows to assist in narrowing GOP primary field.
New Hampshire Governor Calls for Republican Candidates to Meet Requirements or Leave Race
In a compelling op-ed published this week, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu issued a bold challenge to Republican presidential candidates. He stated that by the end of the year, they must meet two specific requirements or face being forced out of the race. Governor Sununu, who holds a crucial position in the primary state, vowed to do everything in his power to ensure compliance.
Writing passionately in The New York Times on Monday, Sununu accused former President Donald Trump of evading his legal troubles by running for office again. He urged other candidates to seize the opportunity and confront Trump during the upcoming Republican primary debate.
“While it’s true that Mr. Trump has an iron grip on more than 30 percent of the electorate, the other 60 percent or so is open to moving forward with a new nominee,” Sununu wrote.
Sununu emphasized the importance of calling out candidates who have no viable path to victory. He criticized some contenders for seemingly auditioning for a Trump presidency cabinet that will never materialize.
The 48-year-old governor, known for his impressive poll numbers in his state, insisted that candidates failing to make the stage for the first two debates should drop out. Additionally, those polling in the low single digits by Christmas must acknowledge their shortcomings.
While Sununu acknowledged the need for candidates to challenge Trump more forcefully, he also called on former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to broaden his message and demonstrate that he is more than just an anti-Trump candidate.
“As governor of the first-in-the-nation primary state, I will do everything I can to help narrow the field,” he declared. “I plan to endorse and campaign for the best alternative to Mr. Trump. As of now, it’s anyone’s for the taking.”
Sununu stressed that governors, senators, donors, and media influencers have a responsibility to assist in narrowing the field. He argued that by prolonging their campaigns, these candidates inadvertently aid Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in securing another four years in office.
