Sununu outlines ways Trump can win early: ‘Momentum is real’ – Washington Examiner

In a recent commentary, former new Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu outlined a strategic‌ path for President-elect Donald Trump to achieve early victories, suggesting that the lack of strong leadership within the Democratic Party could ‍provide an advantageous backdrop. Sununu,⁢ who is identified as a centrist⁢ Republican and has been critical of Trump⁣ in the past, emphasized the importance of “political momentum” leading up to Trump’s inauguration. He noted that Democrats currently lack⁢ a cohesive structure after⁤ the recent election cycle, wich may obligate ⁤them to ⁣seek common ground with Trump’s agenda.

During an appearance on Fox ‍News, Sununu highlighted that Trump has‍ a limited window—specifically within the next two to six months—to leverage this momentum effectively. He expressed hope that members of Congress, particularly Speaker Johnson and Senator Thune, will recognize the ⁣urgency to act decisively. Sununu concluded that if Republicans can unite and capitalize on this political landscape, there could be notable opportunities for success in the near future.

Sununu outlines ways Trump can win early: ‘Momentum is real’

Former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu suggested the path for President-elect Donald Trump to score early wins is practically set before him, as the Democratic Party currently does not have proper leadership.

Sununu, a centrist Republican who has critiqued Trump in the past, explained that the “political momentum is real” for the president-elect ahead of his inauguration, partially due to how Democrats have no “structure” following the 2024 election cycle. As such, the only choice Democratic lawmakers have right now is “try to be successful” and find common ground with Trump’s agenda and the Republican lawmakers working to enact it.

“It’s not going to be easy, but there’s a time limit,” Sununu said on Fox News’s One Nation with Brian Kilmeade. “I know we’d like to do it forever, but Trump has to take advantage, I think, of the next two to six months. That’s when the biggest and strongest wave of political momentum will exist, and he’ll take advantage. Will Congress respond? I know Speaker Johnson will, I think Thune will, but will the membership in that very narrow margin that they have right now understand that you get it done now or you get nothing done. And if they can do that, if they can coalesce around it, the sky’s the limit.”

The former governor then listed a few actions Trump could take without needing the help of Congress, such as resolving the global conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. Israel, for instance, is “ripe” for reaching a peace deal that could last for six months to two years, and the war in Ukraine can also be resolved since both Ukraine and Russia are “exhausted” from their conflict.

One point of criticism that Sununu had on Trump was the president-elect’s initial preference for “one big beautiful bill” from Congress to enact his agenda, as the former governor argued that he prefers breaking bills down into multiple smaller bills. As such, he advised Trump to “take the easy stuff first” with smaller bills, as this tells the public “you are there to get stuff done” and help voters support the president’s vision for the nation.

At the end of 2024, Sununu assured that there is still room within the Republican Party to criticize Trump, who has been widely considered the “standard-bearer” of the party. He cited Trump’s nomination of former Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general as proper criticism of the president’s decision, as Gaetz later withdrew his nomination and Trump then nominated Pam Bondi instead.

Trump will be inaugurated as president again on Jan. 20. Ahead of his inauguration, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has invited the president-elect to visit California as the state deals with raging wildfires displacing many residents.
