Super Bowl end zones won’t read ‘end racism’ this year

The NFL has decided to discontinue the ⁤use of the phrase “End Racism” in the end zones for the upcoming Super ⁣Bowl, marking the first time ⁢since 2021 that‌ this slogan will not appear on the field. Instead, the end zones at the Caesars Superdome will feature the phrases ‌”choose Love” ‌and “It Takes All of Us.” This⁤ change, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, is a response to recent national events ‌and is meant ⁤to reflect a⁢ more hopeful message. The‌ decision aligns ⁢with‌ the NFL’s role in addressing societal issues and providing a platform for conversation.

Additionally, the NFL has allowed ⁤teams to vary the slogans on their helmets, with players ⁣frequently enough opting‌ for messages like “Stop Hate” and “Be Love,” in addition to “End Racism.” As the Kansas‌ City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to⁣ face each other in the Super Bowl, there is also notable context concerning previous White House invitations for winning teams, notably involving former President Donald Trump, who famously did not invite the Eagles after their 2018 victory. ⁤This year, Trump is reportedly supporting the Chiefs as⁤ he becomes ⁤the first‍ sitting ⁢president to attend‍ a Super Bowl.

Super Bowl end zones won’t read ‘end racism’ for first time since 2021

The NFL has opted not to feature the phrase “end racism” on the end zones at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans this coming Super Bowl.

“End racism” has been sprayed on the field for the last four Super Bowl games. This year, it will be replaced with the phrases “Choose Love” and “It Takes All of Us.” Recent events prompted the change, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.

“The Super Bowl is often a snapshot in time, and the NFL is in a unique position to capture and lift the imagination of the country,” McCarthy said in a statement. ” ‘Choose Love’ is appropriate to use as our country has endured in recent weeks wildfires in southern California, the terrorist attack here in New Orleans, the plane and helicopter crash near our nation’s capital, and the plane crash in Philadelphia.”

Helmets also used to feature “end racism” decals. These have been more regularly traded out with phrases such as “stop hate,” “choose love,” and most recently, “be love.” Players always had the choice to toggle between phrases.

This will be the third consecutive Super Bowl for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t make the cut last year, so this will be the second time they face off against the Chiefs in their five Super Bowl appearances.

Whichever team wins the game that ends the NFL season is traditionally invited to the White House afterward to receive congratulations from the president in person. The Eagles were the favorite team of President Donald Trump’s predecessor, former President Joe Biden.

When the Eagles last won the Super Bowl in 2018, Trump did not invite them to the White House. Instead, Trump held an event where the U.S. Marine Band and the Army Chorus performed the national anthem on the White House South Lawn. He sang along with his hand over his heart and encouraged all to stand for the national anthem, which was an obvious slight to the league, which at the time was combatting players kneeling during the anthem. None of the Eagles knelt during any game that season or since.

This year, Trump is rooting for the Chiefs, according to his congratulatory posts to them. On Sunday, he will become the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. Former first lady Jill Biden was in attendance when the Eagles last appeared in the Super Bowl in 2023

Both teams had very similar seasons. The Chiefs had a 15-2 record, and the Eagles held strong at 14-3. The odds of either team winning the Super Bowl are evenly split.
