The NFL stated that neither the production team nor Roc Nation were aware of the individual’s intentions, describing the act as unplanned. Law enforcement is also considering potential charges against the man involved.
Super Bowl halftime cast member banned for life for unfurling flag mid-performance
A cast member who was hired to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show unfurled a combined Sudanese-Palestinian flag during Kendrick Lamar’s performance and has now been banned from NFL events.
This comes as Israel has been at war with Hamas for almost two years, with Palestinians taking refuge in Gaza, which has since become an epicenter for the fighting. Meanwhile, in Sudan, the rebel Rapid Support Forces have been at war with the Sudanese Army since April 2023. The U.S. determined the RSF has committed genocide during the war.
The man was dancing on the trunk of a Buick Grand National on the field of the Caesars Superdome when he unveiled a flag that combined the flags of Sudan and Palestine with the words Sudan and Gaza written on it. He evaded security for less than a minute, and was ultimately tackled and removed.
“The individual will (be) banned for life from all NFL stadiums and events,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. The league also confirmed “no one involved with the production was aware of the individual’s intent.”
Entertainment company Roc Nation issued its own statement, claiming that the demonstration “was neither planned nor part of the production and was never in any rehearsal.”
Law enforcement is considering charges against the man.
