Supermoon may heighten Hurricane Idalia’s storm surge.

Supermoon Could Amplify Storm Surge from Hurricane Idalia

As Hurricane Idalia approaches Florida, there ⁢is concern ⁤that the storm surge⁢ could⁢ be ⁣intensified by an upcoming supermoon. CNN meteorologist Chad Myers recently⁤ discussed the‍ potential⁤ impact of the‌ supermoon on⁤ the storm surge.

According to Myers, the moon ‍is currently‌ 18,000 miles closer to Earth than usual due to its elliptical orbit. This closer proximity means ⁣that the moon’s gravitational pull‌ is about 5% stronger than normal. This increased pull could result in higher tides and a more significant storm⁤ surge.

Myers explained that⁤ this stronger gravitational pull ⁣could raise ⁤storm surges by about a foot.⁣ This matches⁤ the high-end forecast from the ⁤ National Hurricane Center for water height above‍ ground in certain areas of Florida.

Not only will the moon ‌be a supermoon on Wednesday night, but it will also be⁢ a rare blue supermoon.⁣ The term ‍”blue” in this⁣ context refers to the‍ occurrence of a second full moon in a single month. This ‌phenomenon won’t happen again ⁢until 2037.

As Hurricane Idalia approaches, residents in Florida are being urged to take precautions. The storm is expected to bring heavy ⁣rain, flooding, strong winds, and‍ the potential for tornadoes. Governor Ron DeSantis has issued evacuation orders for the Big Bend area, emphasizing the danger ‌of storm surge.

DeSantis warned, ⁢”Storm surge is something you’re not ‍going to⁤ win that battle if you decide ⁣to stay behind for ‌that. You run away from the water and then you‍ hide from the wind.”

The outer‌ bands of the storm are ⁢already affecting ⁢parts ⁤of Florida, ⁤with flooding reported in Fort⁢ Myers. It is crucial for residents to stay informed and take necessary measures to ensure their safety during this potentially dangerous weather event.
