Supreme Court approves pipeline construction, denies environmentalists’ pleas.
The Supreme Court Allows Construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline to Resume
The Supreme Court has made a significant decision to allow the construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline to resume. This comes after an emergency petition from the project’s developers, which led to the court granting an application to vacate all stays against the pipeline’s construction.
Previously, lower courts had ordered a halt to the construction while legal challenges against it were ongoing. However, the Supreme Court’s order temporarily overrides these orders, giving the green light for construction to continue.
The Mountain Valley Pipeline is a natural gas pipeline that spans approximately 303 miles between northwestern West Virginia and southern Virginia. According to Governor Jim Justice’s website, this project aims to enhance energy infrastructure in the region.
A Victory for Democratic Senator Joe Manchin
This decision by the Supreme Court represents a major success for Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, who has been a strong supporter of the pipeline. Manchin had criticized the Fourth Circuit for issuing a stay against a section of the pipeline’s construction, calling it “unlawful.”
President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also played a role in fast-tracking the pipeline’s construction as part of a debt-ceiling deal. Their agreement instructed federal agencies to issue all outstanding permits for the pipeline, allowing for its completion.
“The Supreme Court has spoken, and this decision to let construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline move forward again is the correct one,” said Senator Manchin in a statement.
The Biden administration also supported the pipeline’s developers, urging the Supreme Court to vacate the stays against construction from lower courts.
Environmentalists, however, have vehemently opposed the pipeline’s construction, targeting Senator Manchin for his support of fossil fuel interests.
