Suspected serial killer caught for Gilgo Beach murders in Long Island.
Police Arrest Suspect in Gilgo Beach Serial Killings
Authorities have made a major breakthrough in the cold case serial killings that shook Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York. Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old New York City architect, has been apprehended for the crimes, according to reliable sources who spoke to the New York Post. Heuermann is set to appear in court on Friday.
A Suspect Emerges
Heuermann is believed to be responsible for the deaths of at least four women, known as the “Gilgo Four,” whose bodies were discovered wrapped in burlap near each other in late 2010. However, he is not currently linked to the six additional victims found in the area.
Early Friday morning, police were seen outside Heuermann’s residence in Massapequa Park, as reported by News 12 Long Island. The outlet described the search for the Gilgo Beach killer as one of the most intense and prolific manhunts for a serial killer in history.
A Prominent Architect Under Scrutiny
Heuermann is the owner and founder of RH Consultants and Associates, a renowned architecture firm located in Midtown Manhattan. The company’s website proudly lists American Airlines and the NYC-DEP Sewerage Treatment as clients. In a recent interview with the YouTube channel Bonjour Reality, Heuermann mentioned his Long Island roots and his extensive work in Manhattan since 1987.
The Connection to Shannan Gilbert
The investigation into Heuermann gained traction after the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, an escort who used Craigslist. Gilbert was last seen leaving Oak Beach on foot in distress one night in 2010. Suffolk County Police reported that she had a driver waiting to take her home, but her client called the driver, stating that Gilbert was behaving irrationally and demanded she leave, as Fox News reported.
Following Gilbert’s disappearance, law enforcement conducted a search along Ocean Parkway, where they discovered the bodies of four women over several days. The first victim identified was Melissa Barthelemy. A year later, Gilbert’s purse and cellphone were found a quarter-mile away from Barthelemy’s body. Two days later, Gilbert’s body was found in close proximity to the other victims of the serial killer.
It is important to note that Heuermann is not currently connected to Gilbert’s death.
Clearing Suspicions
Heuermann’s arrest seems to exonerate Dr. Peter Hackett, a long-time suspect in the case. Hackett, the former head of Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services, had contacted Gilbert’s mother after her disappearance, assuring her that her daughter was safe and under his care. Initially denying the phone call, Hackett was later proven to have made it through phone records. During media interviews about the murders, he even feigned a heart attack.
Former police chief James Burke, who was embroiled in controversy for obstructing the FBI’s involvement in the initial investigation, was also once suspected of being the Gilgo Beach killer. In 2016, Burke was sentenced to prison for assaulting a man in police custody. The stolen duffle bag from Burke’s car, which contained sex toys and pornographic DVDs, fueled speculation about his involvement with sex workers. However, no evidence has been found linking him to the murders.
As the investigation unfolds, the arrest of Rex Heuermann brings hope for justice to the families of the victims and closure to the community affected by the Gilgo Beach serial killings.
